﴾ I, I am your Sustainer; so take off your two sandals. You are in the valley set apart, Tuwa. ﴿
An emphatic particle with the speaker's own pronoun fastened to it, and then a second, separate pronoun that the sentence does not need. The speaker doubles himself before the predicate arrives. And the predicate is not a name. It is rabbuka, "your Sustainer," with the ka of address on the end: a relation between two, not an identity standing alone. The first thing said to the man called was not who I am but what is between me and you.
The root r-b-b is a keeping-close that runs alongside what it keeps and carries it from stage to stage, and the doubled second letter makes that keeping continuous. The word states an ongoing act, not a static title. The one being called now was already being reared before he was called, and walked toward the fire while it was so. He learns the relation here; the name is given to him two verses on.
Then a connective turns the identification straight into a command, with nothing in between. And the command is singular: his people had been told to stay, in an earlier verse, and he alone is addressed here. Ikhlaʿ, from kh-l-ʿ, is the loosening of what was clinging until it leaves its place and stands off separated. And the sandals are dual, from n-ʿ-l, a covering that holds what the foot treads on and hangs on to it. So what is ordered undone is the thing that clung between the foot and the ground, and there are two of them, and both go.
Then the verse gives its own reason in the clause immediately after. A command and its stated cause, with nothing set between them. What the verse did not say about the sandals it did not say; the command is read, the cause is read, and the reading stops at their edge.
The emphatic particle comes a second time in a single verse. The first fastened the speaker; this one fastens the one addressed. Who I am, and where you are. The preposition is one of place, and the valley, from w-d-y, is a bound and settled channel down which what descends runs, a low place where the paths knit together. It was not said "you are on a mountain." It was said "in a hollow."
Al-muqaddas is a passive participle of the doubled form. The root q-d-s is a decisive cutting-off that holds and lasts, so that what was separated out does not mix back in. And the participle says the separating was performed upon the ground and not owned by it: the valley is set apart, not self-setting-apart, and the doubled middle letter makes the separating dense and repeated. So the stated cause of taking off the sandals is where the foot stands, and nothing else. A ground singled out from what is around it, a man standing on it, and a command that falls on what lies between the two.
Then one last word attached to the valley. It is given and nothing is added to it. The verse names no direction for it, no distance, no mark to steer by. Whoever wants to set a finger on the ground will find nothing in the verse to set it on. Its letters can be heard as letters are heard, ṭ-w-y, a broad closing that knots and encircles and then runs on in length; that is heard, and no patch of earth is fixed on the strength of it. The verse named the valley and did not point to it.
A command was given and its cause was given, and nothing third was given. What lay between the foot and the ground came off because of where the ground was.
