﴾ I, I am Allah. There is no god but I. So serve Me, and set the ṣalāt (the continuous connection) upright for the remembrance of Me. ﴿
Innanī comes with its nūn in full, whereas two verses back it came lightened, in "I, I am your Rabb (the Nurturing Sustainer)": the word grows heavy where the statement grows heavy.
Then comes anā, "I," for the third time, and then the name. With that, three steps are completed across three verses and the making-known is whole: first a relation, then an act that fell upon him, then the name. He came to know who was speaking to him in stages, not all at once.
The lā that follows denies the whole kind, not a single member of it, after which one is excepted.
The root ʾ-l-h denotes an aim that clings and takes hold of a direction, then opens onto a breath going out toward the one aimed at. So the negation cuts this clinging away from every direction, and the exception gathers it to a single one.
This phrase stood in the opening of this Surah with the pronoun of one absent, "there is no god but He"; here it comes with the pronoun of the one speaking, the same phrase with another pronoun. The wording is one, and the difference lies in who says it: there it was said about Him, and here He says it of Himself, to a man who is present and listening.
Then a fāʾ that builds on the restriction: the direction was narrowed to one, and the turning toward it was then commanded.
The root ʿ-b-d is an appearing out of depth that joins and holds fast, and is then regulated and made steady. From it comes the ṭarīq muʿabbad, a road made smooth by so much walking that it has levelled and hinders no one on foot. So service, at the root, is a role regulated by repetition and made steady.
The command is "so serve Me," not "so serve Allah," with the object a yāʾ fastened to the verb. As long as the speech is face to face, the one served stays a pronoun within the address, not a name pointed at from far off.
Aqāma is on the pattern afʿala, the fourth form, from q-w-m: to make a thing stand upon what holds it upright. What is commanded is that the ṣalāt be set up, not that it be done; it is a setting upright, not a performing.
The root ṣ-l-w denotes a firm hold that clings and takes possession, and is then joined on in a long, drawn-out joining, that is, a tight bond that pulls two ends together and does not come loose. So what is commanded to be set upright is a bond, not a movement.
Then a lām that gives a reason and attaches, hanging what now stands on one thing: the setting upright has something it hangs on, and the verse names it rather than leaving it to the reader.
The root dh-k-r is a sharp entry held shut inside and then brought back to the surface. So remembrance is the bringing out of what was deposited, not the receiving of a stranger, and what it is annexed to is the yāʾ of the speaker: a remembrance that is His.
This very command stands elsewhere in the Book, hung on something else: "Set the ṣalāt upright from the sun's slipping off." One form of the command and one lām, hung there on a time and here on a remembrance; the two are noted side by side, and nothing is added to that.
A nūn in full after a lightened one, a pronoun coming forward for the third time, and then the name. So the making-known was completed in three steps: a relation, then a choosing that took place, then a name spoken. Next, lā denies the whole kind, and ʾ-l-h is an aim that clings, takes hold of a direction and opens as a breath toward it, so the clinging was cut from every direction and gathered to one; the phrase said in this Surah with the pronoun of one absent is said here with the pronoun of the one speaking, face to face. A fāʾ then builds on the restriction, and ʿ-b-d is an appearing that holds fast and is then regulated and made steady, with the object a yāʾ fastened to the verb, not a far-off name. There follow aqim, from q-w-m, the setting of a thing upon what holds it upright, and ṣ-l-w, a tight bond pulling two ends together. Last, a lām hangs what stands on a remembrance, from dh-k-r: the deposit brought out to the surface. The bond was set upright so that what was deposited might be brought out, and it was hung once on what turns and once on what is called to mind.
