Commentary
The lightning in this verse does not illuminate, it lunges. The root kh-ṭ-f carries three moves: khāʾ, a piercing that comes from above; ṭāʾ, a spreading out along a surface; fāʾ, a splitting that carries one piece off. A khaṭf is therefore a swoop from a height that lays its hand flat across a surface and tears a part loose with no warning given. That is exactly what a strong flash does to the eye: it arrives all at once, it floods, and for a few moments it cuts a person off from his own seeing. Then the verse says "almost". Yakādu marks a nearness that never closes. The sight is not taken; it is held at the edge of being taken.
Next comes the walking. M-sh-y is a step that shifts a position, and whoever takes one must own an axis that tells him where before the foot leaves the ground. The munāfiq owns no such axis, so he waits on the flash. "Whenever it lights the path for them they walk a few steps in it": the light arrives from outside him, and the "in it" goes back to that light. He moves inside a corridor of brightness that lasts as long as the flash lasts, and not one step past its edge. This is walking inside a loan, not the walking of someone who owns his road.
Then the dark closes and "they stand still". Q-w-m in Arabic never names sleep or slackening; it names holding upright and fixed in a place. So the dark does not knock them down. It freezes them where they already are, upright on their feet, neither forward nor back. Turning back would be an admission, and they refuse it; going forward wants the axis, and they do not have one. Their whole gait divides between a snatched step in the flash and a rigid halt in the dark.
"If God willed, He could take their hearing and their seeing." The law that opens this is the conditional that withholds its own outcome, naming what would follow from a will that is not exercised. So the line is not a threat of blindness and deafness to come. It is a reminder about what is already in use: the hearing and the seeing that carry them through these in-between moments are themselves lent. And the close, "He has power over every possibility", names that power by q-d-r, the placing of each thing in the measure that is due to it. Not the force that strikes, but the fitting that sets. The word precedes the term here too: this is not a scene of punishment but a scene of disclosure, that every instrument in their hands is on loan and can be drawn back at any moment.
The image comes down onto two feet here. The lightning, b-r-q, a flare that spreads and uncovers and then is gone, almost snatches the sight, kh-ṭ-f, the swoop from above that detaches a part with no warning; and "almost" keeps this a standing danger rather than a finished loss. Out of that danger the gait takes its shape: not in the full flash, which snatches the eye, and not in the full dark, which freezes the foot, but in the between, in the moment of borrowed light. "Whenever it lights the path for them they walk a few steps in it", then "whenever it darkens over them they stand still": a standing, q-w-m, held upright in place with neither advance nor retreat, and no sleep and no falling in it, since return is refused and advance is impossible. Every step is conditioned by an intermittent charge from outside, never by a steady axis within. And the closing line is no threat. The hearing and the seeing they spend in the flashes are a loan and not a property, and the power, q-d-r, the setting of each thing in its due measure, says that the perception and the foot they take for their own are lent out, and can be drawn back at any moment.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
Usually read as a description of the hypocrites' anxiety in the storm: the lightning nearly snatches their sight; when it lights up, they walk a few steps; when it darkens, they freeze. God is able to remove their hearing and sight as a punishment.
A root-reading
(Kh Ṭ F) = a snatching that takes all at once. (M Sh Y) = a step that shifts position. (Q W M) = standing still or rising in place. The hypocrite cannot walk in full light (it snatches vision) or in total darkness (it freezes him); he walks only in the in-between flicker. His stride depends on a borrowed, intermittent glow: a step here, a halt there. The closing reminder if God willed He would take their hearing and sight repositions hearing and sight as a loan, not a possession.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
🔬 Reflection
"Whenever it lights for them they walk in it, and when it darkens upon them they stand": cognitive opportunism as a psychological pattern
The verse closes the rain-parable of the hypocrite with a precise behavioral image: a motion conditioned on external light. "Whenever it lights for them, they walk in it; and when it darkens upon them, they stand still." This is the description of a psychological kindler that has no internal source of light; it moves when someone else illuminates, and stops when it grows dark.
The two phrasings run in parallel but with a precise grammatical difference: kullamā means "every time," conveying repeated occurrence, while idhā means a single conditional event. The walking in the light recurs many times (every time it lights); the standing in the dark is grammatically less detailed (when it darkens). As if the self latches onto every beam that arrives, and surrenders quickly when one beam is cut. Opportunism in seeking light, surrender in its absence.
The extracted rule: the Qur'an uses the model of borrowed light to distinguish those who possess an inner source from those who consume only an outer one. Later in al-Ḥadīd: "on the day when the hypocrite men and the hypocrite women will say to those who have believed: 'wait for us so that we may take some of your light'" (57:13), a Day-of-Judgment image that completes the picture in 2:20. In this world the hypocrite walks by the light of the believers; in the hereafter he asks for that same borrowing and is denied. Light in religion is not something borrowed from a neighbor but is born in the self from inside. Whoever did not kindle his own fire: a single lightning-flash of the outside snatched away his sight.
"If God had so willed": the divine law of restrained capacity in the grammar of fate
The phrase "and if God had so willed, He would have taken away their hearing and their sight" is a counterfactual conditional that recurs in the Qur'an in specific patterns. It performs two functions simultaneously: it affirms capacity and affirms the restraint of capacity by will. With full capacity, holding back is the chosen act.
Notice in al-Naḥl: "and had God so willed, He would have made you one community" (16:93), He could unify and does not, leaving room for testing. In al-Sajda: "and had We so willed, We would have given every soul its guidance" (32:13), He could guide all and does not, leaving room for choice. In al-Anʿām: "and had your Lord so willed, they would not have done it" (6:112), He could prevent and does not. These formulations disclose the structure of fate: full capacity with deliberate restraint, leaving the human in the field of testing.
The closing "truly God has power over all things" is not a transient emphasis but a declaration that the prior restraint is not from inability. The capacity stands; the holding back is a choice. And that is why divine kindness comes to the hypocrites in just this form: their hearing and sight are not taken from them despite the capacity to do so, leaving open the door of returning we saw at 2:18. The extracted rule: in the Qur'an divine power is not exercised as a mechanism that responds to wrong with immediate cutting-off, but extends a span, delays, keeps channels open. And the mistake the human imagines, that the delay of consequence is evidence of its absence, is itself the very suspension under which he is being tested. The capacity waits; it does not disappear.
