Commentary
The root s-b-ḥ carries in its letters a movement extended through a pure medium: an extension (s) that connects (b) inside a living, clean middle (ḥ), and from it comes the word for swimming. So the angels' "Distant are You from any flaw" is no repeating of a formula of praise. It is a declaration that the Real is far from every defect that clings to those who act. And placing this sentence ahead of the admission of incapacity has an exact function: whoever acknowledges first that no defect disfigures his Lord finds in his own incapacity nothing that would cast doubt on Him, while whoever begins with his incapacity before declaring his Lord free of defect lets that incapacity come out as a protest. The glorifying here is a condition for the soundness of the apology, not an ornament laid in front of it.
The angels said: "our power to distinguish is itself a gift from You, not a faculty of our own." And this acknowledgement is exactly what sets them apart from Iblīs in the scene that follows: the angels received because they acknowledged their limits, and Iblīs was turned back because he claimed what was not his. Whoever claims a knowledge he was never taught builds a barrier in his own mind that turns guidance away from him; and guidance is the pointing out of a road, which does not reach a mind its owner has filled with a claim, as a vessel already full takes in nothing poured into it. So the acknowledging of ignorance is not a literary humility only; it is the first step in the whole system of learning, and holding the self back from claiming is a kind of preventive guarding that stops the disaster before it happens. And the angels may have no need of this language at all, belonging as they do to a world with no uvula in it, no throat, no human instruments of speech; but they were made to speak it so that the reader would be taught how the door of receiving is opened.
Al-ʿAlīm, "the One who distinguishes precisely", from ʿ-l-m, is the One in whom that distinguishing holds; and al-Ḥakīm, "the One who holds things in their proper place", from ḥ-k-m, is the One who sets each thing in its fixed position: a living containing (ḥ) with a firm grip (k) that gathers into a coherent unity (m). The two names go together and neither is cut off from the other: precise knowledge of a thing is followed by the setting of it in its right place, and without the knowing the setting would come by improvisation, while without the placing the knowledge would stay a looking with no trace left behind. And the angels' sealing of their answer with these two names is an acknowledgement of the principle by which things are apportioned in the cosmos: the One who holds things in their place lays the trust only in a being that carries it, and gives the taking of the place only to a being equipped for it. So the setting of Adam in that place, which the angels had found hard, is in its right position, because it follows from the will he was made to carry and no other creature was. The word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity: the angels did not contest their station, they acknowledged its limit, and the door of learning opened wide for them.
The angels' answer in this verse is not an apology but a lesson in the structure of receiving. They open with ﴿سُبْحَانَكَ﴾, from the root s-b-ḥ, the clean flowing that is far from anything clinging: a declaring free that comes ahead of the admission in order to strip it of every shadow of protest. Then the admission itself is exactly framed. They do not say "we know nothing", but ﴿لَا عِلْمَ لَنَا إِلَّا مَا عَلَّمْتَنَا﴾, "we have no discriminating knowledge except what You have given us", and that distinction is decisive: a complete power inside what was deposited in them, with its limits set from outside. The difference between the angels and Adam is not one of quantity but of kind: the angels take in the showing at rest, and Adam brings forth by what he was taught. And what this admission confirms from the facing side is that whoever claims a knowledge never deposited in him builds a barrier in his own mind against whatever comes to him. Then the verse closes on two names that hold together: al-ʿAlīm, a showing out of the depth with no limit set to it, and al-Ḥakīm, from ḥ-k-m, the setting of each thing in its fixed position, as the bit sits fixed in the mouth of a horse. Precise knowledge of a thing brings with it the setting of it in its place, and this holding in place is no matter of manners but an act of firm fixing: the setting of Adam in the place, which the angels had found hard at 2:30, was in its right position, because the One who distinguishes precisely and holds things in their place lays the trust where the apparatus that carries it is. The word before the term, and the limit acknowledged is the gateway of receiving, not the title of a defeat.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
Usually rendered: "They said: Glory to You, we have no knowledge except what You have taught us; You are the Knowing, the Wise." The ḥakīm is usually read as "wise," meaning one of sound judgment.
A root-reading
(Ḥ K M) = firm-setting, placing a thing in its steady position. The ḥakīm is the one who puts everything in the position where it comes to rest. The two names ʿalīm and ḥakīm are linked: fine knowledge of a thing is followed by knowledge of its right location. A reading that recovers ḥikma as the act of firm-setting, not a literary attribute.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
Interpretation
First: what the letters say
The root (ʿ l m) encodes a rising from depth; the angels acknowledge that their depth is bounded by what was formed within them: knowledge complete within what was deposited, but with limits from outside. The closing pair is tightly linked: «al-ʿAlīm», unbounded rising from depth, and «al-Ḥakīm», from (ḥ k m), placing every thing in its settled position. Precise knowledge is followed by knowledge of the right place.
Second: the scene
The angels stood before the question without an answer. They did not pretend, they did not strain. They stated the limit simply: «We know only what we have been taught.» They placed «subḥānaka» before the admission, not rhetorical courtesy, but a discharging of the Sustainer from any flaw, so that their acknowledgment of their own limit carries no shadow of reproach. The angels neither belittled their position nor insisted beyond it.
Third: the pattern that may recur in any time and place
This pattern returns wherever one who works within what was given stands before a field that exceeds it. Acknowledging the limit does not weaken the being, it is the condition of genuine receiving: the one who claims knowledge not given builds a barrier against what is coming. The being that names its own limit is ready to receive what the one who claims falsely cannot.
Fourth: anthropological speculations and projections
The angels' answer ﴿لَا عِلْمَ لَنَا إِلَّا مَا عَلَّمْتَنَا﴾ describes a cognitive architecture that animal behaviorists have a name for: domain-specific cognition. Knowing complete and finely tuned within one narrow channel, totally absent outside it. The honeybee encodes the location of nectar with geometrical precision yet cannot apply that precision to anything else. The desert ant computes a return path with extraordinary accuracy yet does not generalize the computation to other terrain. These competences are complete and sealed, and may parallel what the angels' statement describes: knowing within what was deposited, with no inward door to anywhere else.
The negative form «we have no knowledge» in the root (ʿ l m) names the absence of self-extending capacity: the angels receive the bringing-forth, they do not generate it. This is precisely the point where humans diverge from every other terrestrial mind that comparative cognition has studied. Steven Mithen described what he called the «cognitively fluid mind»: the human capacity to transfer knowledge across the closed compartments that house the different intelligences. The hunter's logic gets imported into the modeling of politics; the body's logic gets imported into the modeling of cosmos. Other organisms hold many sealed domain-specific intelligences; humans hold a machine that breaches the walls between those domains. The angels describe the prior pattern; Adam embodies the new one.
The verse closes on two paired names: al-ʿAlīm al-Ḥakīm. The root (ḥ k m) is firm-setting in proper place, the same root that gives the bit in a horse's mouth: what holds the jaw and steers it. Pairing knowing with firm-setting touches what cognitive scientists call metacognition: the capacity to know what you know and to know the edge of what you know. The angels in declaring «we have no knowledge except what You have taught us» perform full metacognition: they know precisely the shape of what they do not know. The very utterance of this sentence, on the lips of any being, reveals where on the cognitive ladder that being stands.
