﴾ He said: "Adam, tell them what each one is." When Adam had done so, God said: "Did I not tell you that I know what is hidden in the heavens and the earth, and I know what you bring out into view and what you keep sealed inside?" ﴿
The root n-b-ʾ is the reporting of a matter of consequence, brought out of an inside with force. So His word to Adam, ﴿أَنبِئْهُم بِأَسْمَائِهِمْ﴾, "tell them what each one is", is no charge to recite a list but a command to exercise the power that had been deposited in him. The proof was not asked of him as a description but as an act: that he designate each thing by its mark. And the word inbāʾ is wider than "saying", so what Adam carried across was not vocabulary to be intoned but knowledge to be brought into view. The repeating of the phrasing, ﴿أَنبِئْهُم بِأَسْمَائِهِمْ فَلَمَّا أَنبَأَهُم بِأَسْمَائِهِمْ﴾, points to a summary followed by its unfolding: he was ordered to tell them in sum, and then the telling took place in fact and in detail.
The heavens and the earth are, in this Book, two cosmic wings: the heaven is the guarded root that no human hand reaches, and the earth is the space handed over to the human being to act within. So His word ﴿إِنِّي أَعْلَمُ غَيْبَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ﴾, "I know what is hidden in the heavens and the earth", gathers the secrets kept in the highest horizon together with what the earth holds back in its own depth. The angels did not fail to tell for any lack in themselves, but because the power called for was of a kind they had not been equipped with; and Adam did not tell out of himself, but out of what he had been taught. And so it is confirmed that the knowing of things in their root and their reality comes only by a direct teaching from God, and that the setting of the human being in the place was no matter of chance but came with a provision of knowledge loaded onto him and onto no other creature.
Tubdūn, from b-d-w, is what comes out to the surface, and taktumūn, from k-t-m, is what is held back inside and pressed shut over. It is the same root that gave khatm, the sealing: the difference between kataba and katama lies in the third letter alone, the bāʾ bringing the writing out and the mīm pressing the concealment down. And concealing, in the logic of this Book, is not merely a behaviour of hiding; it is the contrary of the logic of kitāb, which is a gathering of an order meant to bring an order about. Whoever conceals has halted the flow of that order. And the first concealer in this scene is Iblīs, who shut his own arrogance inside himself and did not bring it out, and what he was concealing will show itself in the verse to come. So His word "I know what you bring out into view and what you keep sealed inside" gives notice that the taking of the place is watched in the bringing out and in the hiding alike, because the being who holds under his surface a layer other than the one he shows is the one who is charged, and not the simple being with no inside to it.
A human being owns nothing of things except their names. Every possession he holds in this world is a contract: the marriage is a name, the title of ownership is a name, the farm is held by its owner in a name. The whole play of owning and disposing and taking the place goes back to names. From here comes His word ﴿بِئْسَ الِاسْمُ الْفُسُوقُ بَعْدَ الْإِيمَانِ﴾, "an evil name is deviance after trust": a person moves from one state to another by a name. Then again, the names are not all of one kind. He said ﴿إِنْ هِيَ إِلَّا أَسْمَاءٌ سَمَّيْتُمُوهَا أَنتُمْ وَآبَاؤُكُم مَّا أَنزَلَ اللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلْطَانٍ﴾, "they are only names you and your fathers have named, for which God has sent down no authority". Among names there is what God has sent an authority down with, and that one is true; and there is what people invented and then granted a claim of truth to, and that one is void, with no authority behind it. So the teaching of the names to Adam is, at its root, a teaching of the names that carry an authority, and the telling of these apart from the names people agreed upon among themselves is the first thing the one who takes the place is tested in. From here the parallel between ﴿عَلَّمَ آدَمَ الْأَسْمَاءَ﴾, "He taught Adam the names", and the first of the revelation to come down, ﴿اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ﴾, "read in the name of your Lord": the name is the key of the worlds, and there is no joining between the created and the Creator except by it. The word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity: Adam did not inherit the place by his being created, but by his power to designate, and then to tell, and so to distinguish.
In this verse the proof takes place, and the divine address then widens past it. Adam was ordered and he told, from the root n-b-ʾ: he brought out of his inside, with weight, the mark that belongs to each thing, and this is what the angels could not do for all their purity, because what was asked of them was a power of a different kind. The scene did not end at that power. It was followed by a divine statement gathering two sides into one phrasing, ﴿أَعْلَمُ غَيْبَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ﴾ and then ﴿وَأَعْلَمُ مَا تُبْدُونَ وَمَا كُنتُمْ تَكْتُمُونَ﴾: the hidden of the cosmos and the hidden of the self held in one balanced frame. The root b-d-w is a coming out to the surface, and the root k-t-m is a precise holding back that clings like a seal: the human being has two layers working at the same time, and both are in view to the One who deposited in him the apparatus for each. And this verse of concealment is nothing but the opening of the scene of Iblīs to come: there was one in that gathering holding inside himself something he had not yet spoken, and the Lord's knowing took in what was brought out and what was kept back. The word before the term: concealing, in this Book, is not a silence but a deliberate sealing over what is known, and that seal lies under a gaze no other seal can shut.
