﴾ As for those who have covered over what they have been shown, it makes no difference to them whether you alert them or do not alert them: they will not do the work of producing safety. ﴿
Kufr, in the root k-f-r, is a hold that separates and then extends, and at the origin of the tongue it is a covering over and an effacing. From it comes the farmer's name in the field: he is called kāfir when he covers the seed with soil. Nothing is covered but what has appeared, and nothing is effaced but what was known. There is no true covering, then, until the light has reached the heart, and the curtain is then chosen and drawn across it.
That is why the verse says "it makes no difference to them whether you alert them or do not alert them". The matter is not an absence of proof; it is the insistence on covering after the proof has shown itself. And at its core the verse is a word to the one who warns, settling his heart: nothing was withheld in the delivering, and these are people who chose the covering willingly and came to what they came to.
The denial of trust to them, "they will not do the work of producing safety", is no injustice descending from above. It is the natural outcome of what they began: whoever chose the covering by his own will is left to the road he cut for himself until he finishes it.
And the making of safety is, at its origin, an act that an open heart expends. A gift is set down only in a hand that has opened; the hand that closed left no room in itself for anything to settle. Proof on its own does not produce safety unless the readiness of a receiving heart comes with it.
Recompense in the order of this Book is a natural effect and not an arbitrary imposition from above: it works in this world across a community, and it completes itself for the single person on the day of the reckoning. The promise binds by generosity and is not broken; the threat stays open to being withdrawn by a turning back, so long as the hour has not run out and the deeds are not sealed.
And what follows this verse, "a closing has come over their hearts", is no final verdict shutting the road. It describes what their own act ended in, a warning that may fall into souls and stir a return. Covering here is the name of an act practised, not the name of an identity that cannot change: whoever lifted the cover moved into the making of safety, and whoever kept it went on covering. The word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity.
K-f-r, at the root of the language, is a covering: the farmer covers the seed with soil, and the night covers the day when it drapes it in darkness. So the one who covers, in this verse, is no name of a ready-made religious identity; it describes an act practised: whoever covered what had been shown to him, drew the curtain over what he had come to know, and chose by his own will to keep the door of the heart shut. That choice explains why alerting and not alerting were alike to them: alerting, in the root n-dh-r, is a sharp penetration that pierces coverings, but it does not pierce a door whose owner has settled on keeping it closed. And trust, in the root ʾ-m-n, is the act of making safety inside; no safety is made except in an uncovered heart, and whoever covered his heart in order to keep it covered left in it no place for that making. Recompense in this Book is a natural effect of the same kind as the act, not a punishment brought in from outside, and the threat can be undone by a turning back so long as the deeds are not sealed; while whoever lifted the covering and uncovered what lay under it has returned to the making of safety, because covering is a role practised and not an identity fastened on.
