﴾ Then you turned away from it, and had it not been for the overflow of God upon you and his holding-embrace, you would have been among those who lose their capital. ﴿
The root w-l-y draws a clinging nearness that reaches and holds: the w a taking-in and an enclosing, the l an attachment that extends, the y a connection drawn out. So walāya is, at the letter, an enclosing that attaches and connects, a nearness so close it does not come loose. And the turning away in this verse is not a slackening in the keeping of a pact; it is the undoing of that closeness itself, the turning of the back on a side that had been wrapped around the self and now stands behind it. This is why "then you turned away from it" falls immediately after the taking of the covenant: what happened is not the forgetting of one clause in a contract, it is the untying of the bond that had been holding the contracting party from inside. And to turn away after a covenant is heavier than to refuse at the start, for the one who refuses at the start never entered a relation at all, while the one who turns away entered and then cut; and the severing of what had been joined is a wound that tells through the whole structure.
The root f-ḍ-l carries a sorting under pressure in f-ḍ, then an attachment that extends in l. So faḍl is, at the letter, what has been set apart with force beyond the measure and then fastened to the one it was given to. That is why "the overflow of God upon you" places the surplus above the one who turned away and not beneath him: a giving that comes before the receiver has earned it, not a recompense arriving after his obedience. Notice also that the verse builds its whole frame on law-lā, the particle that withholds an answer precisely because the condition stands: "had it not been for the overflow of God upon you and his holding-embrace, you would have been among those who lose their capital." The withheld answer, the losing, is the natural verdict earned once the bond is untied. So the loss was not lifted from them as a reward for holding straight, since they did not hold straight; it was lifted by what pours from God's own side before conduct is ever reckoned. It belongs to the nature of faḍl that it runs ahead of desert. Let it arrive after desert and it is no longer faḍl but wage.
The root r-ḥ-m is the root of the raḥim, the womb that holds the forming child and bends over it: the r an extension, the ḥ a dense sheltering warmth, the m a sealing that closes tight. So raḥma is, at the letter, a sheltering vessel sealed around what grows inside it, and not a thin feeling passing over the face of the one who wills. And the pairing of "the overflow" with "his holding-embrace" is exact in what each describes: the faḍl is a surplus above desert, the raḥma a vessel that keeps the structure from caving in under the weight of what was turned away from. The faḍl comes from above; the raḥma comes from around. The one arrives as a gift; the other works as a containment that keeps a being from falling apart entirely. Without that sheltering vessel, the turning away would have been enough on its own to drop the one who turned below the zero line.
The root kh-s-r names one particular kind of harm: the kh a loosening that opens a void, the s a fine and exact seeping, the r a running on without stop. So the losing here is a fine erosion that seeps into the capital and keeps going, the thinning of a principal and not a sudden blow to the head. This is why the Qur'an keeps this losing apart from its words for punishment: the one who loses is the one whose fund erodes and never settles, until he finds himself with no capital at all. And the plural, "those who lose their capital," points to a standing class that holds that position; those addressed, once the bond was untied, had nothing before them but to be counted into it by the plain working of things, had the overflow and the holding-embrace not come between. So the verse does not say "we would have destroyed you," nor "we would have punished you." It says "you would have been among those who lose their capital," with the lām that answers law-lā: an inevitable thinning that follows from the nature of what was turned away from, not a penalty sent down on them from outside.
The word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity: turning away is not a mere holding back but the untying of the w-l-y bond that had enclosed and attached and connected; the overflow, f-ḍ-l, is a surplus that runs ahead of desert and not a reward laid on top of it; the holding-embrace, r-ḥ-m, is a sheltering vessel that keeps a collapse from completing and not a passing emotion; and the losing, kh-s-r, is an erosion inside the capital and not a blow struck from outside. So the one who turns away is not saved by the name his group carries, nor by being counted inside it, but by a surplus that arrives ahead of him and a vessel that closes around the erosion already at work in him.
After the covenant shown taken and held firm under the mountain in the verse before, the turning comes: "then you turned away from it." The thumma of delay says the turning was not immediate; it came once a stretch of time had been allowed. And w-l-y is the face turned aside and the walking off. Then comes what the one addressed does not expect: "had it not been for the overflow of God upon you and his holding-embrace." F-ḍ-l is the surplus in excess of what is earned, and r-ḥ-m is the softness that holds and takes in as the womb does. "You would have been among those who lose their capital": the walking off entailed the losing, were it not that a surplus outside all desert closed around them. The verse does not excuse the turning away. It uncovers that the community stood at the rim of a complete erosion of its own fund, and that what kept it standing was nothing it had earned. The overflow and the holding-embrace are not prizes handed out for an achievement; they are a guard set against a fall that was owed. And that is what makes the debt carried in them larger.
