Commentary
The root ṭ-m-ʿ is an attachment to something wanted, still hoping to reach it even when it is slow in coming. The question here is put in order to deny: does an attachment still remain in you to their joining you, after what you have seen? And "extend their trust to you" is not "trust in God", since the people of the Book already trust in God. The lām here is the lām of safe-conduct: that they hand themselves over to you, that they give you social safety and take you into their circle. The verse reads the relation with the measure of a social role before creed, and warns the people of trust against hanging their existence on the acceptance of a faction that made no secret of tilting the kalām of God itself.
The root ḥ-r-f turns on the ḥarf, which is the flank and the edge of a thing and not its center. Tilting, at root, is the leaning of a thing off its place onto another of its sides; the text keeps its letters and can still be leaned by its setting. This bites deeper than changing a letter, because a changed letter is exposed while a leaned meaning hides inside the touch. And the root ʿ-q-l is binding: a person ties the meaning to its source the way a hobble ties a beast. "After they had tied it to its source" states decisively that the act came after the binding was complete, not before it. So the tilting described here is not the slip of someone who misunderstood; it is a deliberate lean with the knot still in the hand.
The Book says it precisely: "a group of them". Not all the people of the Book are tilters, but a group known by what it did, those who heard the kalām as a real hearing, tied it to its source, and then leaned it. Tilting is the burden of the one who heard and tied, not of the one who never heard. And this is a key to a general method in this Book: a stance is measured by its act and by the position of the one acting, not by the placard he carries.
These verses did not come down as a piece of narrated history; they came down as a mirror. The pattern they draw can repeat itself: the people of a religion suppose the outward is enough, so the form stays and the core is pulled out of it. The rites stay and justice goes; the recitation stays and khashya is missing; the placards stay and the role changes underneath them. The warning of this sūra is aimed first at the community of this Book: whoever walks the road of knowing distortion has its ruling reach him, even with a different placard raised in front of his face.
The kalām of God is not a sound passing through an ear. The root k-l-m in Arabic names the saying that leaves a mark, the speech that wounds as a blade wounds; from it comes kalm, a wound. The word, at its origin, is a saying entered into its speaker's own account, binding him and binding whoever hears it. It is not a passing utterance but a placing, coming down on its site the way a seal comes down on wax.
And this sonic skeleton, K-L-M, crosses the tongues. In Latin there is clamare, the verb for calling out with a voice that carries and binds, and from it the noun clamor, an audible call. English inherited from it claim, the demand, the saying that requires something, along with clamor, exclaim, acclaim, proclaim. French inherited clamer, clameur, réclame, proclamer. One skeleton, a k at the front, an l in the middle, an m at the end, carrying the same meaning in every tongue: a saying that comes down on its site, a call that binds its hearer, a declaration that takes a stand.
On that listening, the truest thing to say in English is not "the speech of God" and not "the word of God", but "the kalām of God, His claim". The English reader who has known the word claim since childhood, in insurance contracts, in claims of right, in everything one person demands of another, knows exactly what the verse is saying. The kalām of God is a position laid on its site. Whoever has heard it cannot innocently walk past it. The verse says: these people heard the claim, tied it to its source, then leaned it while knowing exactly what they were doing. Tilting only happens after the kalām has landed as a demand that binds its hearer. Whoever never heard has no tilting in him; and those who heard knew they were standing in front of a claimant who does not turn away.
The word crosses the tongues of humans, and its meaning stays fixed in its sonic skeleton. The kalām of God, in any tongue, is the claim that cannot be sent back.
So the word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity: "tilting" is an act carried out by a faction that tied the text down and then leaned it, and "extending trust to you" is a request for social safety and not for creed.
The denying question "do you still hope", from ṭ-m-ʿ, uncovers an attachment to something that hardly ever comes. And "extend their trust to you" does not mean "trust in God", since the people of the Book already trust in Him; it means they give you social safety and take you into their circle. The scene the verse has already set out is enough to cut that hope off: a group, not the whole, and this Book keeps that distinction, heard the kalām of God, then ʿ-q-l, tied it to its source the way a camel is hobbled, then ḥ-r-f, leaned it onto another edge. Speech in the root k-l-m is not a sound passing by but a saying that lands on its site and binds whoever hears it; and out of that root the sonic skeleton K-L-M shows through in the Latin clamare, the English claim, the French clamer: a declaration that requires a stand. So tilting can only happen after the kalām has landed as a claim upon its hearer; before that there is no tilting, only ignorance. These heard and tied and then leaned it with the knot in their own hands. The word precedes the term and the role precedes the identity: tilting, ḥ-r-f, is the role of the one who knew and leaned, not the role of the one who never knew, and that is why hoping for safety from those who have decided to lean falls away.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
Usually read as a dispute between two historical views, "alteration of the text" and "alteration of meaning," with most exegesis leaning toward the second.
A root-reading
Ḥarrafa (Ḥ R F) = bent the thing toward another edge. ʿAqalū (ʿ Q L) = tied the matter to its source. And kalām (K L M), the very same skeleton appears in Latin clamare / clamor, in English claim, clamor, exclaim, proclaim, and in French clamer, clameur, réclame: an utterance that lands, that stakes a position, that places a demand on whoever hears it. The Arabic root also gives kalm, "wound", speech as something that leaves a mark. The operation the verse describes is therefore not just comprehension followed by misreading; it is hearing a claim, tying it to its source, and then tilting it on its flank with full knowledge of what was being tilted. You can only distort a claim after it has landed.
A reading that hears the K-L-M skeleton sound through into English claim, and places taḥrīf in a continuous act: the claim landed, was acknowledged, and then was turned aside.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
وعلى هذا الإصغاءِ يَكونُ أصدَقُ ما يُقالُ في الإنكليزيّةِ "the kalām of God, His claim"، دونَ "the speech of God" أو "the word of God".
🔬 Reflection
"A faction of them": the locus of distortion is the faction that heard
The verse opens the next arc immediately after the cow story, shifting the discussion from the people's events to a structure in their relation to the Word. The phrase pins the location with precision: "a faction of them used to hear the speech of God." "A faction" is indefinite, picking out a particular group rather than the whole. Who is this group? The one who "used to hear the speech of God" in the imperfect, an iterative form, i.e. the one who hears it as a vocation. This faction differs from those to whom meanings are then transmitted: it is the faction of first receivers, the carriers of the Word.
The Qur'an elsewhere makes the distinction visible. In al-Anʿām, after a sequence of repeated signs: "they would not have believed unless God willed, but most of them are ignorant" (6:111): the believing faction remains a minority no matter how many signs come. What our verse adds is more precise: distortion itself is not the act of those who did not hear, but the act of the one who heard and tied the meaning. Those who did not hear receive what is handed down to them; the one who heard, tied, then handed it on holds the power to tilt. From this the rule stands: the locus of distortion is at the point of transmission, not at the point of reception.
The rule the verse yields from within itself: whoever stands at the point of transmission, the one who heard and tied the meaning and then handed it on, carries a doubled trust; and when he betrays it the danger to the Word is greater than the danger from one who never heard at all. The faction here is bounded by what it did, not by any label it wears: it heard the speech, tied it, then tilted it.
"After having tied it, knowing exactly what they were doing": distortion is the work of the conscious
The verse closes every door the distorter would open for himself: you cannot say "I misunderstood," because the text says "after they had tied it" (min baʿdi mā ʿaqalūhu). ʿAql in its root is not a passing mental representation but a tight binding, the way the ʿiqāl binds a beast to its stake. You cannot say "I forgot," because the text adds "and they were knowing" in the circumstantial mode, accompanying the act. Distortion proceeds with knowledge present in the very moment. The verse strips away every possible excuse and leaves the deed bare: a deliberate tilting by one inhabiting a position he knows.
This law repeats in the Qur'an in different shapes. Earlier in al-Baqara: "and do not cover truth with falsehood, nor conceal the truth, while you know" (2:42). "While you know" mirrors "and they were knowing": same structure, same diagnosis. In al-Māʾida the pattern recurs: "they distort the speech from its positions" (5:13) and "they distort the speech after its positions" (5:41). The word was in its position, then was displaced from it after it had settled. Distortion in the Qur'an is always an act that follows knowledge, never one that precedes it.
The psychological law the verse uncovers: knowledge itself does not protect its owner. Whoever thinks understanding is enough to keep the heart from tilting under the pressure of self-interest, the text breaks that supposition. The deliberate bending only comes from one who understood; so the antidote to distortion is not more knowledge but trust to one's position. The next verse exposes the instrument by which the bending happens: a split discourse between the outside and the inside, in "and when they meet those who believe they say 'we believe,' and when they retire to one another in private" (2:76). The discourse is doubled, and the word is bent inside the closed space to serve the closed group.
"Do you still hope": a structurally sealed transfer
The opening question is addressed to the believers, not to the distorters. The question is not "why do they distort?" but "why do you hope?": the Qur'an moves the seat of inquiry from the agent of distortion to the one who is waiting for delivery from him. Hope (ṭamaʿ) in its root is an attachment to a desired thing with an expectation of obtaining it; what the Qur'an negates here is not the hope of their guidance in general but the hope of social delivery, that they would let you into their circle.
The distinction is fine: "that they would believe to you" (yuʾminū lakum) is neither "believe in you" nor "believe in what you have," but "for you" with the lām. The lām here brings the verb into the field of social trust and consent. What is denied is the hope that they would open for you the door of communal acceptance after you have seen the structure of their dealing with the Word. The rule the verse posits: whoever has not kept faith with the word between his hands cannot be expected to keep faith in delivering it to whoever comes after him.
Consider the location of this verse in the surah: it comes after scenes of blessing (manna and salwā, shade, water) and scenes of transformation (the slain, the cow, the bringing-to-life). All these scenes were meant to break the hardness mentioned in the verse before: "then your hearts grew hard" (2:74). When they did not break, the verse moved to the structure that hardness produces: distortion. Hardness and distortion are paired: the heart hardens and bends the word; the bent word entrenches the hardness. To hope to break this loop from outside it is sealed; it breaks only by the act of the one who is hardening from within.
