Commentary
This verse works alongside verse 86, but it moves where the goods are standing. There the phrase was "purchased the lower life at the price of what comes after": they gave the farther and took the nearer. Here it is "sold themselves", and what they laid down as the price is the self. N-f-s in the Arabic tongue carries the breath and the life, and it carries the centre out of which a person lives. So what is spent here is not a later stretch of time; it is the centre by which one holds one's own centrality. The bargain has been raised a whole degree. Whoever spends the farther in order to keep the nearer stays the owner of the nearer; whoever spends the self keeps nothing that could still be called an owner. And that is why the censure "how wretched" stands at the head of the verse before anything else is said. The thing bought is too cheap to be worth what was paid for it.
Then the verse names the mover, and names it without a veil. B-gh-y in Arabic carries an asking that oversteps its limit; from it come baghā, to trespass, and bughya, a thing sought. They did not cover because the case was short of complete, nor because the writing had failed to confirm what they hold. The case stands and the confirming is finished. The real mover is stated outright: "out of envy that God would bring down out of His favor upon whomever He wills among His servants", the narrowness of a self that cannot bear the favour landing anywhere but where it was expected. So the covering in this passage does not come before the baghy; it follows it. Covering here is a tongue lent to a movement of the self, not a standing decision of knowledge. Few places in the Book divide an objection made out of knowledge from an objection made out of grievance as finely as this one.
God's favour had become mixed in their reckoning with a single line of descent, so that whatever came down outside the line was refused, not by an argument but by a founding assumption that the favour is theirs alone. The verse cuts that thread with three phrases. "Out of His favor": the attribution to God moves the ownership; the favour is His, and not the ground of a tribe. "Upon whomever He wills": the field of the sending down runs by His will, and not by a right some group holds in advance. "Among His servants": the circle is the circle of servanthood, open to whoever enters it, and no standing inside it passes down by descent. And this is where the grievance grows heavier even than the covering it produced: it arises the moment anyone supposes that a house among the houses of humans holds the door of the sky.
The close draws a picture rather than a verdict. B-w-ʾ points to a returning to a shelter, and from it come mabāʾa and bawwaʾa. So "they returned" is not a bare shift of condition; it is a going back to a dwelling, carrying in what was gathered on the way. And anger in this Book is the presence of a severance between God and one who walks a marked pattern, not a turbulence of feeling projected upward. The doubling of "anger upon anger" draws a doubled severance: one from the earlier earning that has already passed through this sūra, the twisting of words, the killing of prophets, the breaking of a pact, and one from covering the new writing that came confirming. The returning, then, is a place where the severance settles in two layers.
And the last word chosen for the affliction is exact. H-w-n points to lightness of worth and the draining of value, not to the force of a blow or the violence of a penalty. "Humiliating" is therefore a description of what the affliction does: not a quantity of pain loaded onto the self, but the setting of the value that self traded away for a grievance. Hold that against "sold themselves". Whoever sold his self is worth thereafter exactly the price he accepted, and if the price was a grievance, then the affliction is the draining of a value that had already lost its worth in its owner's own eye. The affliction extends the structure of the bargain. It does not arrive from outside it.
The sale is a bargain struck over the self and not merely over a stretch of time; the grievance is the mover of the covering; the favour is not bounded by a house; the returning is a shelter into which its owner carries what he built; and the humiliating affliction is the draining of a value that had already drained away at the moment the contract was struck.
This verse raises the lens of the bargain set in verse 86. There the phrase was "purchased the lower life at the price of what comes after", giving the farther and taking the nearer; here it is "sold themselves", and the goods laid on the counter are the self, from n-f-s, the centre by which a person holds his own centrality. Whoever spends the farther is still the owner of the nearer; whoever spends the self has nothing left to own. The real mover is named outright: b-gh-y, an asking that oversteps its limit, a narrowness that cannot bear God's favour coming down "upon whomever He wills among His servants" rather than where the group expected it. "Out of His favor" makes it His and not a tribe's ground; "upon whomever He wills" makes it His will and not a right held in advance; "among His servants" leaves the circle open to whoever enters it. "They returned", from b-w-ʾ, is a going back to a shelter carrying in what was built. And the humiliating affliction, from h-w-n, drains a value that had already drained at the moment of the contract. The word precedes the term: covering God's favour is the role of anyone who holds that a house among the houses of humans owns the door of the sky.
Commentaire
Two Readings
Common reading
Commonly read as a reproach of the People of the Book who rejected the Muhammadan prophethood out of envy that it came among people other than themselves.
A root-reading
Ishtarū bihi anfusahum (Š-R-Y + N-F-S) = they sold their own selves. Baghy (B-GH-Y) = pursuit of what is not rightfully one's own. Bāʾū (B-W-ʾ) = returned to their dwelling carrying. Muhīn (H-W-N) = that which drains a thing of its standing. A reading that lifts the verse from sectarian blame to the architecture of a deal: their own selves were the coin, the price was the claim on what was not theirs, and the outcome is a loaded return into what they built.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante

🔬 Reflection
"Wretched is that for which they sold themselves": The sale whose object is the self itself
The verse continues the motif of sale introduced in 2:86 ﴿اشْتَرَوُا الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا بِالْآخِرَةِ﴾ ("they bought the life of this world with the hereafter"), but it shifts the object from the "hereafter" to "their own selves" (anfusahum). This shift reveals the depth of the deal: the thing surrendered is not something the buyer owns and can do without, but his very self. The particle bi enters upon the relative pronoun mā, making the surrendered object "their selves" and the acquired object "that for which they bought."
This is the core of the deal in its depth. A merchant gives his money and gains his goods. But the merchant here gives his self and gains his goods. The word biʾsa at the opening of the phrase denotes the wretchedness of the subject: the sale is not bad only in its profit, but bad in its very form: what can possibly compensate for the self itself? The Qur'an uses this formula again in 2:102: ﴿وَلَبِئْسَ مَا شَرَوْا بِهِ أَنفُسَهُمْ﴾: the same structure, the same stance. The law: wherever the object of the sale is the self itself, the offer is ultimately a loss regardless of how much the counter-goods amount to.
In the Qur'an, the opposite stance is mentioned in the form of a successful sale. The same sale, the same object (anfus), but the buyer is Allah, and the compensation is Paradise. The lesson: the self is sold in both cases; the choice is not whether it is sold or not, but to whom it is sold. He who leaves his self on the path of rejection (kufr) of what he recognized has sold it for what is unworthy. He who leaves it on the path of what Allah sent down has sold it for what is higher.
"Out of envy that Allah would send down of His favor": The hidden motive in rejection
The root (b-gh-y) denotes a seeking that exceeds the limit. Baghy is not just seeking, but a seeking that infringes upon another without right. The verse makes baghy (envy/insolence) the motive beneath the rejection of what Allah sent down. The reason is not doubt in the Book, nor ambiguity in the subject, but a baghy within the self that seeks to have the favor confined to its own group. The deal is concluded under this motive: surrendering the revealed Book for the sake of maintaining the structure of monopoly.
The grammatical structure is worthy of contemplation. The prepositional phrase "out of envy that Allah would send down" acts as an adverbial of cause (mafʿūl li-ajlih). The meaning is: they rejected because of the envy (baghy) toward Allah sending down. Here, the baghy is directed toward the act of sending down itself, not toward the person of the recipient. It is as if they are objecting to Allah for sending down His favor upon others. The objection reaches the very site of Divinity, overstepping against Him who chooses. Rejection here is not only rejection of the Book, but an implicit challenge to Him who sends it down.
This motive is paralleled by what the Qur'an mentions in An-Nisā': ﴿أَمْ يَحْسُدُونَ النَّاسَ عَلَىٰ مَا آتَاهُمُ اللَّهُ مِن فَضْلِهِ﴾ (4:54). The same structure: objection to the favor that descends elsewhere than the desired location. Envy (ḥasad) and baghy are two forms of a single structure: the self makes itself the criterion for what ought to be; if what arrives does not match it, it rejects it with kufr or envy. The law: the more hidden the motive is beneath the formula of cognitive disagreement, the more dangerous it is, for the one who denies may not see his own motive.
"So they returned with anger upon anger": Accumulation of consequence by accumulation of cause
The root (b-w-ʾ) denotes returning to a place where the returner settles. From it comes mubawwa' for the place one takes as a dwelling. The verb bāʾa differs from rajaʿa in its structure: it does not imply merely returning, but returning with something after having departed from it. They returned carrying a repeated anger.
The repetition "anger upon anger" calls for an explanation. It is not merely a rhetorical emphasis, but a structure of accumulation. Each step in the sequence of rejection in the preceding verses invokes a specific anger: the arrogance in 2:87, the claim of "wrapped" hearts in 2:88, the rejection of what was recognized in 2:89, the baghy in 2:90. These materials accumulate in a single response that comes "upon" itself. The particle ʿalā (upon) denotes the elevation of one subject over another, not parallel lines. The first anger is not erased by the second; it remains and carries what comes to it.
Fourth: speculations and projections
This corresponds to a logic well-known in the Qur'an, which is the logic of accumulation of favor in the opposite direction. In al-Baqara (also 2:245): ﴿فَيُضَاعِفَهُ لَهُ أَضْعَافًا كَثِيرَةً﴾. A good deed generates by doubling, and an evil deed accumulates by being carried upon another. Both reveal a single law: an act in the Qur'an does not end with itself, but generates what follows it. The conclusion ﴿وَلِلْكَافِرِينَ عَذَابٌ مُهِينٌ﴾ seals the accumulation with a specific description: "humiliating" (muhīn) from the root (h-w-n), i.e., making its owner in a position of hawān (ignominy). Ignominy is the opposite of the baghy in the motive: he who wanted to raise himself by baghy over others ends up in a position where he is ignoble even to himself. The result corrects the structure that the doer built within himself.
Le Coran utilise cette formule à nouveau en 2:102 : ﴿وَلَبِئْسَ مَا شَرَوْا بِهِ أَنفُسَهُمْ﴾ : même structure, même position.
