﴾ And when you went out early from your family, assigning the trusting to positions for fighting. Allah is all-hearing, all-knowing. ﴿
The conjunction attaches "when" to the context and opens a past time that is recalled for understanding. Going out early, from gh-d-w, is a depth that pushes through and outward and then connects in a drawn-out extension, so it carries the movement of departure in the first part of the day. The second-person marker assigns the act to one agent, and "from your family" fixes the point at which the going out begins. Family, from ʾ-h-l, is a cut that opens an empty course and then extends in attachment; it traces the near space that the one addressed left behind.
"Assigning" stands as a circumstantial to the agent of "you went out," joining the departure to work carried on at its own time. Settling, from b-w-ʾ, is a connection that holds fast and closes fully upon its place, setting its bearer in a dwelling he keeps to, and the doubled consonant is a sustained and repeated charge of preparing and distributing. The object of the verb is the trusting, and the active participle carries in them the nature of a trust that acts and continues. The work is therefore the settling of the bearers of that trust into places, one after another, rather than an unshaped massing.
"Positions" comes as a second object of the assigning, so it names what the trusting are settled into. Sitting, from q-ʿ-d, is a knot that emerges from depth and then holds firm under restraint and pressure, establishing a place that is held. The plural marks the multiplicity of the sites, and the preposition ties them to fighting. Fighting, from q-t-l, is a knot in the depth that is cut, so that what was knotted to it slips loose, while the reciprocal form carries the facing of two sides; so the movement of assigning appears as an ordering of many positions for this encounter.
The conjunction closes the verse with a nominal sentence that places the name Allah first and carries two predicates. Hearing, from s-m-ʿ, is a confining that comes together in a gathering and then emerges from depth, so it reaches what is heard and contains it; "all-hearing" is an intensive form carrying breadth and firmness. "All-knowing" comes from ʿ-l-m, an emerging from depth that extends and gathers into a known unity, and it too is an intensive form. So what was said in the assigning and what the movements carried both fall within the hearing and the knowing.
The verse calls up a definite time through its acts: a going out at daybreak from the family, and an assigning in progress that settles the trusting into positions whose purpose is fighting. The pronouns and verbs build the scene from within the wording itself, with one agent who goes out, a company set into places, and a purpose that the preposition ties to fighting. The close then gathers what is heard and what is known under the name Allah, binding the outward ordering to what is not hidden of the sayings and states of those within it.
