﴾ If something good touches you, it grieves them; and if something bad strikes you, they rejoice in it. But if you are patient and mindful, their scheme will not harm you at all. Indeed, Allah encompasses what they do. ﴿
"If" opens a condition, and the verb "touches you" is feminine because its deferred agent is "something good." Touch, from m-s-s, is a drawing together that runs along a fine channel, and the repeated sīn intensifies the arrival of the touching. "Something good" is indefinite, so it takes in everything that carries good and reaches the addressees. The answer of the condition, "it grieves them," returns its effect to the bearers of the traits already described: what is good for you is bad for them. The indefinite keeps the good at its full breadth, because the opposition rests on the direction of the effect rather than on its kind: everything that touched the addressees with good came back upon the others as grief.
The conjunction brings back "if" and builds a parallel condition: the striking of something bad, again indefinite. Striking conveys the arrival of a thing at the place that receives it, and the pronoun keeps the addressees as that place. The answer, however, is a plural present: they rejoice in it. Joy, from f-r-ḥ, is a cleft that runs on unbroken and then passes outward, so the opening of the inside becomes visible. The preposition joins their rejoicing to the bad occurrence itself. So the mirror turns over: your good grieves them, your bad delights them, and all the pronouns refer to the agents described in the context before this verse.
After two responses of the others have been described, the conjunction opens a condition that makes the addressees the agents: if you are patient and mindful. Patience, from ṣ-b-r, is a firm hold that is restrained under pressure and then runs on unbroken, so it keeps the one who holds it within the extension without slipping loose. Guarding, from w-q-y, is a connection that tightens its knot in the depth and then softens, extended, around the one who bears it. It is coordinated with patience, not substituted for it: steadfastness keeps the position, and guarding keeps the one who holds it. The pairing of the two verbs gathers standing firm and keeping safe into one practical answer.
The answer of the condition is a negation: their scheme will not harm you at all. The pronoun of the addressees is brought forward as object, and the scheme then appears as agent, annexed to its own bearers. Scheme, from k-y-d, is a withholding that keeps what is in it and lasts, then pushes it through toward an aim, so it conveys a covered arrangement. "At all", however, being indefinite in a context of negation, takes in the least measure of harm. The phrase does not make the existence of the scheme vanish; what vanishes is its arrival, once patience and guarding are realized.
The emphatic particle affirms the sentence and puts the name of Allah first, and "what they do" is then fronted before "encompassing." The word "what" takes in all their deeds in a single word, while the present tense of "they do" conveys their continuance, so the encompassing falls upon an ongoing act rather than upon a completed sum. Encompassing, from ḥ-w-ṭ, is a containing that spreads heavily over every side of a thing until it takes it all in. The participle presents the encompassing as standing in the One who bears it, rather than as an event that occurs and then breaks off, so the secret concealed within the scheme is met by a knowledge from which nothing escapes. What is hidden in the scheme does not get outside Allah, and what is held firm by patience and guarding is not left by Him without keeping.
The first two conditions uncover the direction of the schemers: the good that touches the addressees grieves them, and the bad that strikes them delights them. The verse, however, does not confine the addressees to watching others; it opens for them a third condition of patience and guarding, and ties it to the denial of any harm from the scheme. The last sentence then encloses all their deeds within Allah, in an enclosing that continues. So protection is an active responsibility, and the scheme is a known thing, not an unqualified power.
