﴾ And those who, when they commit an obscenity or wrong themselves, remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their dhunūb (the faults that trail), and who forgives dhunūb except Allah, and do not persist in what they did while they know. ﴿
The conjunction adds a relative clause onto the qualities of the mindful, although the quality does not claim that slipping is absent. "When" opens a case that occurs: they commit an obscenity or they wrong themselves. The act, from f-ʿ-l, is a cleft that penetrates, then appears out of the depth and attaches to an effect. Obscenity, from f-ḥ-sh, is an opening that enters a narrow containing and then spreads, and it names what has gone past its bound. "Or" keeps the two alternatives apart without forcing them into one, and the wrong is turned toward themselves, as the object states outright.
The answer to "when" comes with the verb "they remember", so the course does not halt at the act that occurred. Remembrance, from dh-k-r, is a soft bringing forth that enters a holding in and then runs on, so it returns the One remembered to a flowing presence; its object is the name of Allah. The connecting particle then joins the immediate result: they seek forgiveness. The request form of gh-f-r asks for a covering that penetrates from the depth and then runs over its place, and the preposition ties the request to their own sins. The verse makes remembrance the door into acknowledgement and asking, and puts no claim of innocence in its place.
The sentence cuts across the listing of their acts with a question that carries its answer inside the exception: who forgives sins except Allah. The present tense "forgives" renews the act of covering, and its object, "sins", is a plural that takes in whatever their request reached, without sorting it into kinds. The particle "except" restricts the one who forgives to the name of Allah spoken after it, so that their asking does not turn into a power of their own that produces forgiveness. Between the remembering of Allah and the excepting of Him, the source and the destination fall into one order.
The conjunction adds another sign, and the negative particle enters upon the present verb, denying persistence in the time that has passed. Persistence, from ṣ-r-r, is a hard closing that runs, the cohesion of that running thickened by the repeated rāʾ, so it carries a settling upon the course. The particle "upon" makes what they did a surface on which they might have stood firm, yet the negation cuts that standing. The act named at the head of the condition remains an occurrence; what the construction lifts away is the repeated residing upon it after remembrance and seeking forgiveness.
The final conjunction is circumstantial, and the pronoun refers the knowing back to the same group: while they know. Knowledge, from ʿ-l-m, is an appearing out of the depth that attaches to something known and then gathers it in a holding meeting, drawing a knowing whose connection is fixed. The present tense keeps that knowledge standing in the time of the situation. The denial of persistence is therefore attached to the state in which knowledge stands, and the stopping appears as a conscious act that cuts the settling upon what occurred.
The verse builds the picture of the mindful out of their course after the act: an obscenity falls, or a wronging of the self, so they remember Allah, and the connecting particle joins that remembrance to the asking of forgiveness for their dhunūb. The question then restricts forgiving to Allah, and denies of them any persistence upon what they did while their knowledge stands. So the relative clause separates an occurrence met with remembrance, with asking and with the cutting of settlement, from an act turned into a residing that is known.
