Commentary
The relative pronoun returns to the mindful and begins to disclose their movement. Spending, from n-f-q, holds within, opens a narrow passage, and knots in depth, drawing an issuing from a store through a known outlet. The present makes giving renewed rather than finished, and the plural makes it a shared nature among bearers of guarding. The verb also comes absolute, with no object to bound it, so it takes in everything brought out of a store toward whoever that narrow passage opens for; the breadth of the wording is what carries the breadth of the description.
"In" places spending inside two contrasting conditions: ease and hardship. Ease, from s-r-r, confines a flow in a course and intensifies its continuation through repetition. Hardship, from ḍ-r-r, gathers weightily, joins a current, and doubles its pressure by repetition. Coordination leaves no gap between expansion and constraint, so the two conditions take in everything their bearer passes through; and in both of them "they spend" remains active, which hangs the description on the endurance of the act across the two states rather than on the amount brought out in either.
The conjunction adds a second quality: those restraining rage. Restraint, from k-ẓ-m, holds, enters an enveloping cover, and gathers within inward containment, drawing the confinement of what presses to escape. Rage, from gh-y-ẓ, rises from inward depth, extends, and ends in an overshadowing cover; it is the object restrained. The quality arrives as a noun and not as a verb, so restraint in them is a standing form and not a passing incident. And since the restraining has an object to restrain, the rage is present in their chests and has not gone: what is described is the governing of its movement, a force held rather than a force extinguished.
A third quality follows: those pardoning people. Pardon, from ʿ-f-w, emerges from depth, opens a passage, and leads into release, carrying a surpassing that clears what obstructed the course. "From" moves pardon away from its object, making the surpassing a departure from the place rather than a dwelling in it. And its object is "people" in full generality, so the one who pardons clears his course for everyone that wide word takes in. Thus the sequence moves from containing the inward force to clearing the outward relation: a force held in the chest, then a bond released from its knot.
The conjunction then brings a nominal sentence whose opening is the name of God and whose predicate is a renewed verb: He loves. Good-doing, from ḥ-s-n, contains inwardly, flows in a precise course, and emerges outward as the quality of action. Those loved arrive under a noun that describes one standing in the act rather than an incident that happened once, so good-doing in them is a quality by which they are known. Nor is the love hung on one of the three traits alone: all of them are gathered under a fourth name that takes them in, the doers of good.
Continuing good-doing spends through both conditions, contains inward rage, clears outward relations, and is joined to God's love.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is commonly read as describing the mindful through spending in both conditions, restraining rage, and pardoning people, then closing with God's love for doers of good.
A reading presenting the qualities and their conclusion.
A root-reading
Spending (root n-f-q) issues from a store, restraint (root k-ẓ-m) contains rage (root gh-y-ẓ), and pardon (root ʿ-f-w) clears the course, gathering the movements of good-doing (root ḥ-s-n).
A reading following issuing, containment, and release.
The two readings do not conflict. The first presents the qualities; the second discloses the order of their movements. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante

Interpretation
First: what the letters say
Spending, from n f q, begins with a holding within a cavity, then a narrow cleft that opens out of it, then a knot in the depth that governs that outlet: a store that is not opened all at once but drawn upon through a controlled aperture. Ease, from s r r, is a narrowing that flows in a precise channel whose doubled rāʾ repeats the lightness of the touch: a condition in which living slides along without resistance. Hardship, from ḍ r r, is a weighty gathering joined to a current, and the doubled rāʾ fixes its adherence to its place: a condition in which the channel grows heavy and will not come loose. Restraint, from k ẓ m, is a holding that enters an enveloping closure and then gathers it in inward containment: a force overspread and gripped. Rage, from gh y ẓ, is a depth that extends and then has a covering shut over it: a pressure from below seeking a way out. Pardon, from ʿ f w, is an emergence from depth that opens a cleft and then leads into release: a channel that had been blocked and is now cleared for the one who was holding it. And good-doing, from ḥ s n, is an inward containment that flows in a narrow course and then rises outward, so that its quality ascends from within it rather than being laid upon it. Every letter in this verse speaks of an interior and an outlet, and of a hand upon that outlet opening it or holding it shut.
Second: the scene
The verse does not identify the mindful by names or by positions but by three movements that all occur in one place: at the boundary of a person between his inside and his outside. The first is a bringing out: "they spend," with no object and no quantity named, and with two conditions named that take in a whole lifetime, ease and hardship; so giving neither waits for abundance nor halts at constraint. The second is a holding: "those restraining rage," and the arrival of rage as an object means that it is present and has not been removed; the description falls upon the hand that grips it, not upon a chest empty of it. The third is a clearing: "those pardoning people," where "from" moves the act away from its object, so the one who pardons leaves a place in which he had a right to press a claim. The close then gathers the three movements under a fourth name that takes them in, "the doers of good," and joins it to God's love. The scene is three doors in one wall: a door opened for wealth so that it goes out, a door shut upon rage so that it is held, and a door opened for people so that they walk out of their keeper's claim. Good-doing is the good management of those three doors. The order of the doors in the wording is not idle: it begins with wealth, the lightest of them upon the soul because it lies outside it, then moves to rage, which is heavier because it lies inside it, then ends at pardon, the heaviest of all because it hands over a right that is genuinely owed; the movement runs from the easier to the harder and not the reverse.
Third: the pattern that may recur in any time and place
This ordering recurs in every community that lives on fluctuating resources and carries among its members what gives rise to rage. As for wealth, whoever ties his giving to abundance alone makes his giving a dependent of circumstance, and when circumstance narrows the bonds his giving carried are severed with it; which is why giving is set in both conditions and not in one of them. As for rage, communities are never without it, and they differ only in where they spend it: some spend it on the spot and their ranks split, and some deny that it exists at all, so that it turns into an inward grudge that lasts long and is never seen. The description in the verse is a third thing between the two: the rage is acknowledged and it is held. As for pardon, it is what prevents small grievances from turning into an inheritance passed down to sons, since a right that remains under claim keeps generating another claim behind it. The three together are what keep a community able to work after hardship and after disagreement, and that is why they are gathered under one name and joined to love. It is worth noting that the state of these doors is known only under constraint: ease conceals a tight hand as it conceals a tight chest, while hardship brings both to light; which is why the two conditions are named at the beginning of the description and not at its end.
Fourth: anthropological speculations and projections
The restraining of rage in this verse may parallel what researchers in psychology study under the name emotion regulation, where a distinction is drawn between suppressing the expression of a feeling and reappraising the situation that produced it. What arrests the reader is that the verse does not stop at the holding: it coordinates pardon of people onto it, giving the held force an outlet in the relationship rather than in discharge; and that same ordering is what the field insists upon when it says that holding alone is costly to the one who holds.
Spending "in ease and hardship" may also meet what the study of societies calls costly signalling: that giving in a time of constraint carries a witness to the sincerity of belonging that giving in a time of surplus does not carry, because what is parted with out of little testifies more truly about the one who parts with it. It is worth noting that the verse levels the two conditions in its wording and prefers neither over the other, so the description remains hung upon the endurance of the act and not upon the rarity of the occasion.
And pardon may touch what is studied under the name of forgiveness research, where forgiving is described as an act that changes the forgiver before it changes the forgiven, since it ends the carrying of a claim in the chest. This is a possible parallel in describing the effect, not a claim that the verse settles a theory of emotion or of society.
