﴾ Those, their recompense is forgiveness from their Rabb (the Nurturing Sustainer) and Gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding therein, and excellent is the reward of the workers. ﴿
"Those" points to the ones described in the two preceding verses, gathering the spending, the restraining, the pardoning, the remembering, the seeking of forgiveness and the not persisting into one single side. Recompense, from j-z-y, is a gathering that packs itself into a narrow place and then extends, so it carries a counterpart joined to the act. The pronoun assigns it to them, and its first predicate is "forgiveness," the first of the recompense. Forgiveness here returns to a covering that runs out of a hollow, yet "from their Rabb" keeps its source a gift from the relation of lordship, rather than a result that the work produces on its own.
The conjunction joins "Gardens" to "forgiveness," so the recompense becomes many without any part of it being cut off from the rest, and the plural adds the shelter after the covering of the forgiveness. Garden, from j-n-n, is a gathering that enters an inward containment, its covering thickened by the repeated nūn, while the plural form gives the word its multiplicity. Forgiveness is an act of covering coming from the Rabb, and the Gardens are a covered enclosure inside the recompense. So one single relation gathers the two predicates, a covering that falls upon what has passed of the act and a covering that holds its bearer in a dwelling still to come; on this account the second was joined to the first and stood beside it.
A present clause describes the Gardens: rivers flow from beneath them, so the Gardens carry a flowing that does not stop. Flowing, from j-r-y, is a gathering joined to an unbroken pouring which then extends in the sound itself, so it carries a renewed movement. "From" begins the course at "beneath them," and the pronoun refers to the Gardens, while "the rivers" are what flows, held back to the end of the wording. River, from n-h-r, is an inward containment that opens into an empty space and then runs on unbroken. Placing "from beneath them" before "the rivers" lets the hearer know the site of the flowing before he knows what flows, so it settles in him that these Gardens stand upon a water that does not fail beneath them.
"Abiding" is a circumstantial state of the ones pointed to, and the pronoun in "therein" refers to the gathered Gardens, so the people of the recompense settle in their dwelling. Abiding, from kh-l-d, is a piercing that goes through, attaches to the place, and then holds firm in it under the pressure of the dāl, and so it draws an extension never cut off from its enclosure. The word is a noun describing their state rather than a verb reporting an entrance, so the remaining is their quality in the dwelling, not a moment by which they crossed into it. "Therein" sets that remaining in the enclosure described just before it, so the Gardens gather a water that renews itself and a people that hold firm: a perpetual movement beneath them and a perpetual steadiness within them.
The conjunction begins anew with a form of praise: "excellent." Reward, from ʾ-j-r, is a sudden release that enters a gathering and then runs on unbroken, so it carries a return that reaches its bearer and the work finds its reward. It is what the praise falls upon, and "the workers" then comes joined to it. In ʿ-m-l there is an emergence that rises out of the depth, gathers and adheres, and then attaches to a trace that stays behind it; so work is what has gone out of the inside into a form attached to a place. Its bearers are named by a noun rather than a verb, so they are described as standing in their work. The close praises the reward from their side, joining it to them as one joins what reaches a person, not as one joins a price that has been reckoned.
The pointing refers the recompense back to the bearers of the acts described before. Their recompense is a forgiveness whose source is their Rabb, and Gardens beneath which flows what the text has named rivers. The plural widens the covered enclosure, the present tense renews the flowing, and "abiding" describes them by their remaining in it rather than by their arrival at it. The form of praise then closes by saying that this is an excellent reward of the workers, joining the recompense to the work without making the work the independent source of the forgiveness: the source is from the Rabb, the dwelling is in the Gardens, and the praise is for the reward.
