﴾ The angels called him while he was standing in ṣalāt (the continuous connection) in the sanctuary: Allah announces to you John, confirming a word from Allah, a master, inwardly restrained, and a prophet from among those who repair. ﴿
The connective joins the ṣalāt to an audible call, and Zechariah meets that call "standing" and "praying." Standing, from q-w-m, is a holding of a thing gathered from within until it stands firm and upright, so that the structure is held together by it and does not come apart. The active participle makes it a continuing active nature and not a posture taken once. He did not step out of the connection in order to go after his answer; the call came to him inside it.
The ṣalāt had sought wholesome offspring with no name attached to it, and the announcement arrives bearing the name John. An announcement is news that spreads through the one who receives it until its trace appears in him. So the answer does not hand over a vague possibility; it sets before the one who prayed a named life that already carries its descriptions.
"Confirming" is an active participle from ṣ-d-q: a firmness held steady, made tight in a correspondence that does not split open. The active participle makes it a continuing active nature, and the intensive form thickens the confirming into a sustained, repeated charge. Its object is a word "from Allah," so the child is joined first of all to what comes from the Source, before he is joined to anything else.
The descriptions gather three things at once: mastery, the holding of the self within a limit, and the carrying of prophetic news. The last of them then places him "from among those who repair," inside a company and not above it. Repair, from ṣ-l-ḥ, is a solidity that attaches itself to a contained life, so that the structure comes back capable of performing its function.
The call finds Zechariah in standing, in prayer, and within the sanctuary. So the answer does not arrive as a cut through the connection out of which the ṣalāt had come; it appears inside that connection. What had been a request with no name returns bearing a name, as though the hearing had sent the generality of hope back as one determinate life, rather than merely receiving it. The announcement does not lift him out of the station of service; it meets him standing in it and adds meaning to where he already stands.
Nor does the answer halt at the granting of a name; it discloses the direction of the one given before the one who asked has him at all: he is bound to a word from Allah, he bears a mastery that restraint holds within bounds, he receives prophetic news, and he belongs among those who repair. In this way the gift is known by the connections, the limits, and the service it will carry, and not by what it adds to the one who prayed alone. The answer is a giving, and it is also a trust with a course to run.
The ṣalāt returns as a call while Zechariah is standing inside the connection. The general request becomes a named life, and then the descriptions of that life are set in order, from confirming the word through to mastery, the limit, and the carrying of prophetic news. The one given is not set apart on his own; he is placed among those who repair. The gift is a name, a direction, and a place in the company of repair.
