﴾ Indeed, the people closest to Abraham are those who followed him, this prophet, and those who trusted. And Allah is the Patron of the trusters. ﴿
The emphatic particle opens the sentence, and "the people closest" is said before any naming of who they are. "Closest," from w-l-y, carries a knot that encloses a bond and then extends attached toward a direction, while the final letter draws that bond out in its flow. The comparative form establishes nearness and, with it, asks for the nearest and the most entitled to that bond; the particle in "to Abraham" ties the relation to his name. After the verse before this one denied two designations of him, this verse redefines nearness to him by a measure that comes in the predicate, and does not leave his place without a bond.
The emphatic lām comes before "those," so the emphasis of the predicate gathers with the emphatic particle that opened the sentence. This division is then defined by its act: "those who followed him." Following, from t-b-ʿ, begins with the frozen nucleus "a weak holding that lets slip what has gathered," and the letter after it grips what slipped and fuses with it, so that following is a walking in an earlier trace that catches up with it and cleaves to it. The derived form brings the doer inside the movement of overtaking and inside its intent. The pronoun returns to Abraham, so nearness is measured by an act that sets its holder walking in his trace, not by a name that a party claims for itself.
The conjunction joins "this prophet" to those who followed. The demonstrative brings the prophet present in the station of address without the verse needing any other name, after which a second conjunction comes: "and those who trusted." Trust, from ʾ-m-n, is a pressed readiness that settles in an inward holding, and its effect then passes from within out into a stance. It stands here as the content of the relative clause, so the third division is defined by a past act that issued from it, just as the first division was defined by a following that issued from it. The threefold list rests wholly on acts their holders carry, and even the prophet made present by the demonstrative enters between two doers, not between two titles. So the list gathers a following referred to Abraham, a prophet present by the demonstrative, and people defined by the act of trust.
The close comes as a sentence in which the name of Allah is set before His description. "Patron" is from the same root w-l-y that carried "closest," but here it is the noun of bond, of nearness and of care. The root opens the verse with a weighing of people's nearness to Abraham and closes it with Allah's patronage of the trusters. "The trusters" is an active participle that keeps trust standing in its holders for as long as it stands in them, so the patronage is joined to an act that renews itself, not to a title given once and then kept. Their bond with Abraham opens onto a patron who carries the people of trust with a care that does not break off, and does not stay a closed horizontal relation.
The verse rebuilds nearness to Abraham after denying of him designations that came later. Those most entitled to him are those who followed him, and this prophet, and those who trusted, rather than merely people who raise a name. Following is movement in a trace, trust is a confidence rising from within, and the demonstrative brings the prophet present in the station. The close then joins the opening of the sentence to its end out of the same root: "closest" weighs people's bond with Abraham, and "Patron" refers the care of the trusters to Allah. So the measure of nearness is an act and a bond, not a possession by name.
