﴾ He said: then what of the condition of the earlier generations? ﴿
This is the second question, and only the interrogative has changed. The sentence begins as the first one began: a verb of saying with no named speaker, then the connective fa, which ties the words to what came before, then an interrogative. The two questions are cast in one mould.
What changed is no more than the interrogative. The first had ﴿فَمَن رَّبُّكُمَا﴾, "who then is the Rabb (the Nurturing Sustainer) of you two," and here it is fa-mā, "then what." Man is the word for asking about someone, and mā the word for asking about what is not someone; with it the questioner changes the kind of thing he asks for.
He had asked first about one who is present and can be pointed to, and was answered with two verbs; now he moves to the absent, who cannot be pointed to. The question neither overturns the answer nor accepts it: it shifts the ground on which it stands.
The question is about a state that clings, not about a report to be retold. His words are "then what of the condition," fa-mā bālu, and not "what is the report of" nor "what did they come to." The root b-w-l is what is held within a person and attaches itself to him, so that it stays with him.
From it, a man's bāl is what has settled in his self and clung to it; mā bāluka, "what is your bāl," means "what is this that has settled in you and stayed on you"; and khaṭara bi-bālī, "it crossed my bāl," means "it fell into that clinging inward place." So the word asks after a state that stays with the one it belongs to, not after an event to be dated.
Here lies the finest point in the question. Whoever asks after the bāl has asked for the state that settled on a people and stayed with them, and not for a history, nor for names, nor for ends told in detail. The answer will come in the next verse, and it will move the very place where the knowing sits.
"The earlier generations" are counted without a number and described without a name. The root q-r-n is a firm joining that couples a thing to its like, so that the two run together and then go out together, and a qarn of people is a company coupled within one span of time, which then passes on and is followed by others. The material names the coupling, not a quantity.
That is why there is no number in the verse. "The generations" is a plural made definite by the article, and the article points without specifying; not one of them has a name, nor a homeland, nor a time.
Their only description is "the earlier," al-ūlā, from ʾ-w-l: a beginning to which what follows it returns. The description is therefore a rank in precedence and nothing else, marking them as the ones who were before. Whoever sets out to fill this emptiness with names and years has added to the verse what is not in it, and the verse says of them only that they went before.
A second question on the mould of the first: a saying with no named speaker, a connective that ties it to what came before, and an interrogative. What changed is that the interrogative asked for someone and now asks for what is not someone, and that what is asked about was present and could be pointed to, and is now the absent, who cannot. Bāl, "the condition," is from a material of what is held within and clings to its owner, so what is sought is a state that stayed with a people, not an event to be retold and not a time to be marked off. "The generations" is from a material that names the coupling and not a quantity, so the word comes definite, with no number, no name and no homeland, and its only description is a rank in precedence: they are the ones who went before. The question neither denies the answer nor accepts it, and it moves the foot from one ground to another; whoever moves the place of the question will have the place of the answer moved on him.
