﴾ He said: knowledge of them is with my Lord, in a writing. My Lord neither mislays nor forgets. ﴿
He was asked ﴿فَمَا بَالُ الْقُرُونِ الْأُولَىٰ﴾, "what of the condition of the earlier generations," and he did not say what their condition was. He said where the knowledge of it is. A content was demanded and a location was given.
The subject of the sentence is "knowledge of them," and the pronoun returns to the generations. So what was asked about is neither dropped nor denied: it is kept inside the sentence as the term of an annexation, while the predicate is lifted off it and set on the one with whom its knowledge sits. And "with" here is a word of presence, not of ownership. One says "with me" of what is at hand in front of you. The answer establishes that the knowledge is present on one side, and lets nothing of it out to the questioner.
Look at the pronoun fastened to "Lord" through this exchange. It began as "the Lord of you two" in the questioner's mouth, then "our Lord" in the reply, and now "my Lord," twice. Three pronouns on one word, narrowing at each stage until it reaches the speaker alone. The narrower his pronoun grows, the wider his ground.
"A writing" is indefinite. Not "the Book," not "my Lord's book," with no adjective and no qualifier. The answer that moved the location does not describe the location it moved to. The root k-t-b is a precise sealing-in followed by an attachment that holds what has been sealed, so a kitāb is that in which meanings have been confined to their measure and bound so they cannot slip. That is why it is named here: what he was asked about is not lost in nothingness; it is held in something that holds. So half a line gathers a presence and a grip: "with" says it is at hand, "in a writing" says it is kept. And after that not one letter is said about its content.
It does not say only "He does not forget." It says two denials joined by a conjunction, with the name between them. Had the two been one thing, one of them would have sufficed; the difference between them is the reason both are said. The root ḍ-l-l is a pressure that spreads until it disappears in its own width, and from it "the water went astray in the milk," that is, mixed in so as to be no longer distinguishable. So the first denial is that a thing should blend into what surrounds it until it cannot be told apart, a denial made about a place that holds everything, since it is only in a crowd that a thing gets lost by blending.
The root n-s-y is an issuing that spreads out and then runs on softly until it slips away. So the second denial is that a thing should escape the grip without a sound and without notice of the escape. The first is a losing in the press; the second is a losing in inattention. And this is the first place in this sūra where the material of n-s-y enters, and it enters denied. The first thing heard of the root is its negation; later in the sūra it returns affirmed, and elsewhere than here. The thread is named and what lies along it is not retold.
Then the name is repeated rather than replaced by a pronoun: "my Lord does not mislay." The wording would have held with "does not mislay and does not forget." The repetition sets the name between the two denials so that both fall on it together, each from its own side.
He was asked about the absent and answered that they are in a hold that neither blends nor lets slip. That is the whole of what was said.
