Commentary
The answer makes known by the act, not by the name. He was asked ﴿فَمَن رَّبُّكُمَا﴾, and he answered with "our Rabb", changing the pronoun and leaving the word as it was: in the question it was annexed to kumā, "you two", and in the answer it is annexed to nā, "our", a pronoun that does not stop at two.
No name comes after that. What comes is alladhī, "the One who", a relative that is not complete without its clause, and the clause here is a verb and then a verb; the question asked for what can be pointed to, and what came is what is done.
Here lies the whole of the shift: a door opened for a single name to enter, and a deed entered through it. Making known by a relative clause makes the one known known by what issued from him, not by what he is called by.
Next comes a verb with two objects, the first of them the one who receives, and the verb is on the pattern afʿala. Giving is a concept with its own entry in this book's glossary, to which the reader can return; here the root comes as a past-tense verb on afʿala, and nothing of this material stands in the verse as a noun: no verbal noun, no active participle, no passive participle.
Elsewhere the same material does come as a noun, an annexed verbal noun, twice within a single verse: ﴿عَطَاءِ رَبِّكَ﴾. Here the root is verb and nothing else.
Two accusatives follow it, "every thing" and "its creation": two objects, which make a full transitivity. With this material the first object is the one who receives, not the thing received; the one given to is "every thing", and what is given is "its creation".
"Every thing" leaves nothing outside it. It is a word that takes in the whole and then makes what follows it indefinite, so no kind is specified and no kind is excepted; the question was about one, and the answer came with what cannot be counted.
The pronoun can point back to two. The hāʾ in khalqahu, "its creation", returns to "every thing", so that what each thing is given is the creation of itself, that is, its own form and not the form of another; it can also return to the Giver, so that what is given is a creation that is His creation. Both faces stand in the wording, and nothing decides between them.
The root kh-l-q is a passing through that catches hold and is then knotted into a firm form, so creating is a measuring that ends in a shape nothing slips out of. On the first face, what is granted to each thing is its own shape, which nothing else shares with it.
The particle is thumma, "then", not wa, "and", and after it comes a verb with no object in view. Wa gathers without ordering, while thumma orders and allows time. So between the two verbs there is an order and a gap: they are not a single thing said in two words.
As for the object, the first verb had two objects, and the second has no object in view at all. The verse does not say who was guided, nor toward where; the act happens and is left unbound.
The root h-d-y is a fine breath that holds steady and so keeps the direction, then travels on with the one who travels. At its base it is a light indication that goes along with the one it guides, not a push and not a driving. So the verse gives first and then points, naming what was given and leaving unnamed what was pointed to.
A name was asked for, and what came was a relative whose clause is two verbs. "Our Rabb" gives back the question's own word and changes its pronoun, so what was bounded by two is now bounded by nā, which does not stop at two. Then the first verb falls on the pattern afʿala, a verb, with nothing of its material standing in the verse as a noun. The verb has two objects: a receiver, "every thing", out of which no kind is left, and a thing received, "its creation", with a hāʾ that can return to the thing itself or to the Giver; both faces are set out, and neither is decided. Then comes thumma, not wa, parting the two verbs with order and an interval, and the verse ends on a verb stripped of every object. With two objects at its start and no object at its end, the verse mentions what was put into the hand and leaves unmentioned the direction walked toward.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is read broadly as being about the fitness of created make: each kind is said to have been given what suits its body and its living, and then directed to what keeps it, and examples are spread out from the states of animals, their limbs and their uses. "Its creation" is explained as outward shape and form, and "guided" as an inborn prompting toward food, mating, and shelter. The line thereby becomes an answer within the knowledge of creatures rather than within the direction the question had aimed at.
A reading that fills the absolute with examples from outside the line and specifies what the second verb left unspecified.
A root-reading
He was asked with "who" and answered with a relative pronoun whose clause is two verbs, so the identifying is by act and not by name. "Our Rabb" returns the wording of the question and exchanges its dual pronoun for "us." "Gave" (root ʿ-ṭ-w) stands on the causative pattern, and in this line the material is a verb, not a noun. The verb has two objects, and the first of them is the receiver: "every thing," which takes in the whole and excepts no kind, and "its creation," whose pronoun may return to the thing or to the giver, and neither face is decided. "Creation" (root kh-l-q) is a penetration that catches hold and is then knotted into a sound shape. Then comes thumma, "then," and not the plain conjunction, so there is order and an interval. And "guided" (root h-d-y) is a fixing breath that runs on with the traveller, and here it comes with no object showing: no one guided is named, and no direction is named.
A reading that counts the objects, reads the separating particle, and stops where the second verb fell silent.
The two readings do not conflict. The first supplies examples for the general; the second listens to the verb's pattern, the count of its objects, and to "then." This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
Tadabbur
A name to point at was asked for, and an act came. The wording of the question was not sent back; it was kept as it stood and only its pronoun was exchanged, so what had been bounded at two widened out. The answer does not refuse the question. It keeps the question's word and moves its ground from a name to a relative clause. What was asked for was something to call by, and what was given was something that issued.
Then count what stands after the verb. Two objects, the first of them the receiver: "every thing," out of which no kind is excepted. And the pronoun in "its creation" stands on two faces and neither is decided. So the widest place in the line is also its least fixed: it takes in every thing and settles nothing about which of the two the making is ascribed to.
Then the connective is "then" and not the plain "and": order, and an interval. The giving is complete before the pointing begins, and there is a gap between them. Then the second verb falls bare of every object. The first filled both of its places and the second emptied them. What was put into the hand is named, and the direction walked toward is not named, and it is not named because the verb left the place open.
Perhaps the two verbs of this line are the two movements that are seen apart in living things: a form the living thing is born already holding whole, and a bearing that is not struck except after some walking in it. The form first, the finding of direction after it, and between them a stretch in which the shape is carried and no bearing has yet been taken. And it may be that this is why the second verb was left without an object: any direction named would close a place the line kept open for whoever walks. This is a conjecture offered as such and not loaded onto the verse, for the verse named a giver, a receiver, a thing given, and a pointing whose object it did not name, and settled nothing about the kinds of living things nor about what any one of them walks toward.
