﴾ Those who covered the truth, among the People of the Book and the idolaters, were not going to come unstuck from where they stood, until the Clear Sign came to them. ﴿
The root f-k-k turns on separation after a hold: a fetter is undone, a pledge is released, what was knotted is unknotted. The infaʿala form carries this undoing over from an act that falls upon a thing to a state the thing is in of itself: that it come unbound of its own. So munfakkīn are those who loosen away from a state they were standing in.
And the verse denies them that loosening. They were not on the way out. They were in a state, and the state clings. The picture of these people is the picture of standing water that does not stir of itself: the Book in the hand of the one it was given to did not push him, and the absence of a Book among those who set others alongside (sh-r-k) did not push them. Each of them is in his own state.
And this diagnosis recalls what al-Baqara says of the people who hold the Book: ﴿مَا يَوَدُّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ﴾, "those who covered the truth among the People of the Book do not wish." The composition is the same: those who covered, among the people of the Book. As though the two Surahs were speaking of one people, holding the writing in its hand and not waking.
"Until" is in Arabic a term at which what precedes it comes to a stop. The stillness they are described by does not last without end; it is still until something comes. Then that something is named: al-bayyina. A noun made definite by the article. Not some clear sign, but the Clear Sign that the weight of the whole text is waiting for.
And in its root (b-y-n) there is an appearing that pierces. Not a speech that reaches the ear, but a showing that goes through the surface and reaches what lies under it. Hence the choice of the word: what unbinds the standing water is not a fresh warning added to what it already holds, but an appearing that pierces a depth not pierced before.
And the next verse will name it: a messenger reciting purified scrolls. But the first verse is content with the name. As though it said: what breaks this stillness exists, and it carries a name the listener knows. Wait.
And the reader does not come out of this verse with a verdict upon a distant people. He comes out with a question that binds him: is he unbound, or held in a state? And if he is in a state, what is the clear sign whose coming he is waiting for? Perhaps it has come already, and he has not come loose.
The Surah opens on the picture of something still that does not move. "They were not ... coming unstuck": the denial of coming unstuck in a past that holds. "Coming unstuck" (f-k-k) is on the infaʿala form: a state the thing is in of itself, that is, the loosening away from a state that had clung. And the verse denies it: they were not on the way out. And they are two kinds and not one: those who hold a writing and do not come unstuck, and those who have no writing and do not come unstuck. Covering (k-f-r) is in its root a laying-over: holding the writing does not lift the covering if the writing does not open. Then "until": a term that waits, a thing outside the scene that will enter and break the stillness. And that thing is "the Clear Sign" (b-y-n): an appearing that pierces and does not bear denial. Fixity is the rule, and what breaks it comes from outside.
