﴾ How would you disbelieve while Allah's signs are recited upon you and His messenger is among you? Whoever holds fast to Allah has indeed been guided to a straight path. ﴿
The conjunction links this question to the preceding warning against obeying the group that would turn the addressees back into disbelievers after their trust, and "how" then asks about the very possibility of that movement in the state the verse is about to describe. In k-f-r, concealment descends upon what has appeared and draws its veil between the sign and the one who looks; the plural present verb places the addressees before a course that remains possible, while "how" sets that course at a distance in the light of the two presences that follow.
The wāw introduces a clause of state, and the pronoun "you" makes the addressees the place on which the recitation falls. In t-l-w, a fine encounter is followed by another that joins it, so that the signs carry one another in an arrival that is heard. The verb is a present passive, so the signs stand out as a subject deferred to the end, and their motion toward the addressees continues. Their attachment to Allah establishes the source, so the recitation reaches them at the very moment when the question sets covering at a distance.
The wāw joins a second clause of state in which "among you" precedes "His messenger," so the site of the presence stands out before the one who occupies it. The pronoun in "His messenger" refers back to Allah, to whom the signs were attached, so the source is one in both states. Within the sentence itself the messenger is present among them, and the question "how" is thereby surrounded by a recitation falling upon them and a messenger in their midst; covering then appears as an act that resists two presences already in place.
The wāw passes from the question to a general condition introduced by "whoever." Holding fast, from ʿ-ṣ-m, denotes an emerging from the depth that meets a firm grip and then gathers into a containing that forbids release, and the derived form brings the doer deliberately into that holding. The preposition ties the holding to Allah and makes Him the measure of the cohesion, while "whoever" opens the act to anyone at all, so that against the road of obeying a group there stands a road that binds the one on it to Allah Himself.
The connective binds the holding fast to an answer confirmed by "indeed": he has been guided. Guidance, from h-d-y, is a course that the breath opens and that holds firm, then extends in a flow toward a direction. The verb is passive, so the one guided and the end of his guidance come to the fore. The term "path," from ṣ-r-ṭ, denotes a firm grip that runs on unbroken and then closes into a broad, governed line, and "straight" is an active participle that makes standing upright a continuing, active nature of the path. So holding fast opens a guidance toward a road that stands, rather than remaining a still fixity.
The question sets disbelief at a distance in a state where the recitation of Allah's signs to the addressees and the presence of His messenger among them coincide. The composition then follows that distancing with a movement set against it: "whoever" opens the way to everyone who holds fast to Allah and binds that holding to a confirmed guidance toward a straight path. Covering is met by the presence of the signs and the messenger, obeying a group is answered by holding fast to Allah, and the outcome is a standing line toward which the movement is guided, not a cohesion without direction.
