﴾ Let there be from among you a community who call to good, command what is recognized, and forbid what is rejected. Those are the ones who flourish. ﴿
The conjunction joins this request to the preceding command to hold fast, and the imperative lām enters upon "let there be" to ask for a definite existence. "From among you" precedes "a community," and so it establishes that this community issues from within the addressees and that its role is more particular than each single person could carry alone. Community, from ʾ-m-m, is a cutting that gathers into a joining, which the repeated mīm then thickens toward an intended direction; that is, a body that makes for a work, which the following verbs disclose.
The first quality comes as a plural present verb: they call. Calling, from d-ʿ-w, is a push that holds firm, then emerges from the depth and connects in extension, so that it goes out from the one calling toward someone called and toward a direction, and "to" fixes that direction as good. The term "good," from kh-y-r, denotes a penetration that extends in pliancy and flow and then runs on unbroken, opening a course that benefits. A call toward the good issues from the community, which does not rest content with keeping it within itself.
The wāw joins a second continuing verb, and the bāʾ ties the command to what is recognized. Commanding carries a direction that does not remain within the heart of the one who holds it; the verse, however, binds it to what is recognized. Recognition, from ʿ-r-f, is an emerging from the depth that runs on unbroken and then opens a cleft that brings into view what has been known. "What is recognized" is a passive participle, which makes the object of the command that upon which recognition has fallen and which has become plain, so that commanding here is neither left without restraint nor made to rest on the wish of the one who commands.
The third verb is likewise a plural present, and so it establishes the turning aside as a work that is renewed. Forbidding, from n-h-y, is an inward containing that opens an empty course and extends in pliancy, turning movement away from a direction, and the particle "from" makes that distancing visible. "What is rejected" is a passive participle from n-k-r, whose root denotes a containing that conceals and grips and then runs on in a course that never becomes clear, so that rejection falls upon it. Call, command and prohibition thus hold one another in balance within a single body.
The wāw passes from the qualities of the community to the judgment passed upon it. The demonstrative refers to the bearers of the three acts, and the separating pronoun sets off the predicate and so strengthens its belonging to them alone. Flourishing, from f-l-ḥ, is a splitting that attaches and extends and then breaks through outward, from narrowness into room. The phrase "those who flourish" presents the bearers of flourishing as established in it, so the result remains joined to the ongoing acts that defined them.
The verse asks that a community arise from among the addressees, known by a threefold movement: a call to good, a command of what is recognized, and a forbidding of what is rejected. "From among you" marks the bounds of that body, and the particles of direction keep the restraints on its acts: to the good, by what is recognized, from what is rejected. The verse then refers to the community by what it has done and makes flourishing a nature at work in the bearers of that movement; the community here is a renewed work before it is a name.
