﴾ Indeed, those who disbelieved: neither their wealth nor their children will avail them at all against Allah. Those are the companions of the Fire; they remain therein. ﴿
The particle of emphasis fixes the judgment that is to come, and its noun is a relative expression that ties that judgment to an act: "those who disbelieved." In k-f-r there is a restraint that grips what has appeared, then a cleft through which a covering runs over it. The past tense makes this movement something that has already occurred on their part before any outcome is built upon it. After the preceding verses have drawn their distinctions among the People of the Book, the relative draws this judgment onto the bearers of that one specified act, and onto them alone.
The future negation then denies that wealth or children will avail them. Sufficiency, from gh-n-y, is a depth that contains within and then rises in an extension that is enough for the one who holds it, but the negation cuts that sufficiency off. "For them" is brought forward, so the side from which nothing is warded off appears first, and only after it come the two agents: their wealth, and not their children either. The annexation of both to their own pronoun establishes the nearness of what is owned and of what is born to them, and even so neither performs the availing that has been denied.
"Against Allah" ties the negation to the field in which wealth and children ward off nothing, so availing is not left denied in a vague absolute. "Anything" then comes indefinite and in the accusative, taking in the least conceivable measure of warding. Thing, from sh-y-ʾ, is a spreading that runs on and then closes on one, which becomes determinate, but here it stands under the negation: nothing. Source and measure meet, and between them they close off any exception that was never stated.
The conjunction joins the recompense to the denial of availing, and "those" refers back to the relative expression that disbelief had defined. Companionship, from ṣ-ḥ-b, is a firm hold that enters into inward containment and then connects and clings, so it depicts an adherence rather than a moment of passing by. Annexing "companions" to the Fire makes the Fire the place of that adherence. The Fire is named with its article, so it becomes itself the antecedent of the pronoun in the following clause. The demonstrative keeps the judgment upon the bearers of the act described.
"They" appears in order to bring the companions of the Fire back to the center of the sentence; "in it" is then fronted, and its feminine pronoun refers to the Fire just named. Remaining, from kh-l-d, is a penetration that attaches and extends and then holds fast under restraint and pressure. The form presents them as standing in their abiding, in continuation, rather than making it a passing report about them. So the companionship established in the preceding clause opens here into a space and a duration: they are its companions, and in it they remain.
The verse bounds the bearers of its judgment by a clause of act: those who disbelieved. It then denies that the nearest of what is owned and what is born, wealth and children, wards off anything at all from Allah. Once availing has fallen, the demonstrative joins them to the companionship of the Fire, "in it" refers to that same Fire, and the active participle conveys a remaining that does not break off. Every judgment in the passage is tied to the relative expression bound by its own act, not to any wider company.
