Commentary
"Likeness" carries what they spend from abstraction into a moving picture. Likeness, from m-th-l, gathers densely and extends in attachment between two sides. Spending, from n-f-q, contains, opens a cleft, and forms an exit from what was held. The present carries continuing action, while "in this lowest life" confines the image to the indicated, lower life rather than every spending.
The comparison joins spending to an indefinite wind, so what spending is likened to remains a shape rather than a single occurrence, and the indefinite carries every wind so described. Wind, from r-w-ḥ, flows onward, connects in extension, and passes outward, carrying traversing movement. "Within it is biting cold" places that force inside the wind. Its repeated consonant intensifies a held, flowing bite. The force lies in the wind and in the bite it holds, and "within it" makes that bite a carried charge rather than something accompanying from outside.
The feminine verb returns to the wind, which strikes a crop. Crop, from ḥ-r-th, confines, flows, and gathers densely, drawing work in the earth awaiting growth. It belongs to a people defined by a clause rather than a name: they wronged themselves. Injustice, from ẓ-l-m, covers, extends, and gathers into enclosure, while its object is their own selves. Self-wronging is stated before the crop's destruction.
The result connective joins the wind's strike directly to destroying it. The singular object pronoun returns to the crop, not the people, preserving the image's target. Destruction, from h-l-k, opens an empty course, extends, restrains, and cuts a thing from its place of growth. The causative assigns destruction to the cold-bearing wind. Expected fruit thus becomes disappearance.
The conjunction leaves the image for judgment and denies that God wronged them. "But" then restores their own selves before the present "they wrong," foregrounding the object receiving their act. The fronting attaches injustice to themselves, while the present carries its continuation, opposite the completed act denied of God. Both clauses together return the cause of the destruction to the actors: a completed act wholly denied of one side, a continuing act affirmed of the other.
The image preserves each agent and object, then explicitly denies injustice of God and returns continuing self-wronging to its bearers.
Commentaire
Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is commonly read as likening spending to a cold-bearing wind that destroyed the crop of self-wronging people, while denying injustice of God and returning it to them.
A reading presenting image and responsibility.
A root-reading
The likeness (root m-th-l) joins spending (root n-f-q) to wind (root r-w-ḥ), which strikes the crop (root ḥ-r-th) and destroys it (root h-l-k), before injustice (root ẓ-l-m) returns to its bearers.
A reading following effect from exit into disappearance.
The two readings do not conflict. The first presents the statement; the second discloses the image's sequence and the act's referent. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante

Interpretation
First: what the letters say
Mathal, from m th l, is a gathering that masses in fine density and then extends in attachment between two sides: a joining of one state to another rather than a mere likening of one word to another. Infāq, from n f q, contains, opens a cleft, and then forms an exit from what was held, so wealth leaves a keeping that had been holding it. Rīḥ, from r w ḥ, flows onward, connects in extended reach, and then passes purely outward: a movement that crosses and does not stay. Ḥarth, from ḥ r th, narrows, flows onward, and then masses in fine density: work in the earth that awaits its growth and does not yield it at once. Halāk, from h l k, opens an empty course, extends, and is then stopped and cut: the vanishing of a thing from the place where it was to remain. And ẓulm, from ẓ l m, is an enveloping screen that extends and spreads and then gathers into closure: the setting of a cover over what had been open in its own course. The letters of the verse therefore draw a single line: something that has left its keeping, an earth awaiting its fruit, a wind that passes, and a cover already laid over the selves before the wind ever blew.
Second: the scene
The verse begins with the word "likeness," announcing that what follows is an image whose movement is to be read. What is likened is "what they spend in this lowest life": a continuing present verb, and a sphere pointed at and described as the lower one. Then the comparative particle brings the second side: "like a wind within which is biting cold." The wind is indefinite, and the cold is inside it by the preposition "within," not accompanying it from outside. The image then moves: "it struck the crop of a people who wronged themselves." What is struck is a crop and not a people; the people are identified by their act and not by their names; and the object of their act is "themselves," so the wronging is stated before the destruction and not after it. Then the result particle brings the outcome: "and destroyed it," with the singular pronoun returning to the crop alone. When the image is complete the verse steps out of it into judgment: "God did not wrong them, but they wrong themselves." A denial in the past of one side, an affirmation in the present of another, and the fronting of "themselves" binds the act to its place. The verse thus sets the loss where it belongs: work that went out, an earth that bore nothing, and a responsibility returning to its bearers.
Third: the pattern that may recur in any time and place
This structure recurs wherever the giving is visible and the ground is screened. The spending in the image is not described as small or as withheld; what is described is the crop, as the crop of a people who wronged themselves, so the defect lies in the earth the work was placed in and not in the measure of the work. From here comes a pattern known in every age: much building is raised on a foundation nobody examined, and a single gust suffices for what was covered to appear. A second pattern lies in the place of the wind: people name whatever carried off their fruit a passing chance or a blow from outside, while the image keeps the wind in its position and does not make it the ground of the judgment, because that ground was named before it, a wronging that fell upon the selves. A third pattern lies in the direction of the wronging: the heaviest thing that reaches a person is what he does to himself and then assigns to another; and that is why the denial is explicit of one side and the affirmation explicit of the selves. Reckoning in this pattern is therefore not measured by what left the hand, but by what had settled inside before it left.
Fourth: anthropological speculations and projections
This ordering may parallel what researchers into the motives of action study under the distinction between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation: one and the same act, identical in its outward shape, differs widely in effect according to what it arose from, and those who study it report that an external inducement can empty an act of its fruit while leaving its form intact. What is worth noting is that the verse describes a spending that actually occurs and does not deny its occurrence; it moves the gaze from the measure of the spending to the earth the spending was placed in. This is a possible parallel in describing the effect of a motive, not a claim that the verse settles a theory of motivation.
The image may also meet what is studied in the anthropology of giving: that a gift is not merely the transfer of a thing but a relation established through it, in which the standing of the giver is read, so that giving can itself become a way of asserting advantage over the one who receives. The verse does not stop at this face and does not name it, yet it makes the crop the crop of a people who wronged themselves, placing a damaged earth in the image before the spending. This is speculation in reading the image, not a judgment upon intentions the wording never named.
And the preposition in "within which is biting cold" may touch what is said in the study of systems: that the flaw carrying a collapse is usually inside the system rather than outside it, and that the visible event discloses rather than creates. The cold in the verse is carried within the wind, and the wind passes over an earth whose people had been described before it came. Everything set out in this section is speculation about the human movement the image points to, and we make no claim that it has reached what God intended by this likeness.
