﴾ Allah had certainly helped you with Badr while you were humbled. So be mindful of Allah, so that you may be grateful. ﴿
The conjunction joins an earlier witness to the command of reliance, and the emphatic lām combines with "already" to fix the help as having fallen in the past. Help, from n-ṣ-r, is an inward containing that meets a firm hold and then runs on as a support carrying the one it reaches. The pronoun of the addressees is the object, and the name of Allah follows it as the explicit agent, so the sentence assigns the help to its source and places the addressees among those upon whom the support fell.
The preposition connects the help to Badr, the name the verse itself pronounced, so it is kept as it stands. The root b-d-r is a connection that presses through and then runs on unbroken, which carries the movement of setting out first and of arriving early; within the phrase, however, the word is a proper name before any derivation from it. What deserves attention is that the help, fixed and from Allah, was connected to Badr by the very preposition that joins an act to the place holding it, so the name became a mark of where the support came down, not a mark of any capacity in those upon whom it fell.
The conjunction is one of circumstance, and "you" shows the addressees in the state they were in when the help fell. "Humbled" is a plural from dh-l-l: a bringing forth that attaches and extends, after which the repeated lām thickens the lowering of the movement, so the circumstance places them in weakness and abasement. Joining the help to this state cuts the support off from any self-sufficiency of theirs and returns it to the explicit agent the sentence named, Allah.
The connective of result ties the witness to a present command: be mindful of Allah. Guarding, from w-q-y, is a knot tightened in the depth that then runs softly around the one who bears it, and the eighth form moves the addressees from the position of those upon whom the support fell to that of those who work at keeping themselves safe. "So that you may" opens the aim in the present verb "be grateful." Gratitude, from sh-k-r, is a confinement that withholds and holds and then runs on unbroken, so it keeps a favor and brings its trace into view. The mention of the help, then, feeds no pride and carries over into the guarding of Allah and the thanking of what He did.
The verse raises the scale of reliance upon an event the text named as Badr, keeping its name exactly as pronounced. The help is confirmed, its agent is Allah, and the addressees are where it fell while they were humbled; for that reason no claim of a strength standing on its own can ever pass through it. The past then becomes a present charge: a deliberate guarding turned toward Allah, and the hope of a gratitude that keeps the trace of the support. The name that was spoken thus remains one witness, and enough: a help that came down in a state of lowliness and left behind it a guarding and a thanks.
