﴾ Indeed, those who disbelieved and died while they were disbelievers, the earth's fill of gold will never be accepted from any of them, even if he ransomed himself with it. Those, for them is a painful punishment, and they have no supporters. ﴿
"Indeed" fastens the relative noun, and the clause that follows joins two completed acts: "those who disbelieved and died." In k-f-r, a covering veils what lies beneath it and goes on extending in that concealing; in m-w-t, motion is carried through to the completion of its own cutting off. The wāw then adds the attendant state, "while they were those who cover," which gathers the moment of death together with a description already standing at that moment. The form kuffār thickens the act of covering until its rootedness shows, and the ruling therefore attaches to a course that closed upon this description.
The fāʾ ties the relative clause to its answer, and lan carries the denial of acceptance forward into what has not yet come. The root q-b-l denotes an inward place that knots itself in readiness for whatever it meets, then joins to it and admits it into its own space. The passive build brings forward the thing turned back and the source it came from. "From any of them" places every single person under the denial, so the ruling runs through the group one by one; in this way the answer cuts off, from any one of them, the receiving of the ransom about to be named.
The passive subject names an amount that fills the earth, and "gold" follows to specify the substance of that amount. Fullness, from m-l-ʾ, is a gathering that extends along its container until it lies flush against it and completes it, so the image leaves no empty room in the earth that was named. "Even if" then brings in a supposed case: "he ransomed himself with it." Ransom, from f-d-y, is an opening that pushes a thing away under a steady payment and then extends toward the release of the one who paid. The supposition leaves "never" intact, and even the whole fill of the earth, spent as ransom, remains inside the denial of acceptance.
"Those" returns to everyone the whole relative clause has described, and "for them" is set first, so the outcome attaches to them before it is named. Punishment is an effect that rises out of the depth, pierces, and then fastens to the one who bears it; "painful" makes the pain a quality of the punishment itself. The composition moves from "will never be accepted" to an affirming sentence: what a ransom was meant to push away remains, and is named a painful punishment. The one descriptor, "painful," stands in the place of every detail, so the punishment is fixed by its own attribute once the value of the supposed substitute has fallen.
The closing wāw brings a sentence denying that they have any supporters. Support, from n-ṣ-r, is a rising up from within that meets firmness and then runs on unbroken in the propping of another. The partitive min after the negation takes in the whole kind, so the wording leaves not one supporter outside the denial. "Supporters" is an active participle, which makes support a continuing, working nature that would have carried them from outside, and it is that nature which is denied. Two roads are shut at once: nothing offered from within them is accepted, and no reinforcement reaches them from anyone else.
The verse identifies the people of its ruling by a course sealed upon disbelief at the moment of death, and ties that course to a denial of acceptance that every single one of them enters, even were the thing offered the earth's fill of gold, spent as a ransom. Once the substitute has fallen, a painful punishment is affirmed for them, and supporters are denied with a denial that leaves no one out. The scene cuts deliverance off from two sides at once: what a person offers of his own, and what another brings him from outside.
