﴾ Indeed, those who disbelieved after their trust, then increased in disbelief, their repentance will never be accepted; those are themselves the straying. ﴿
"Indeed" opens an emphatic sentence, and the relative noun defines the bearers of the judgment by the clause attached to them. In kafarū, from k-f-r, the kāf covers over what had been apparent, the fāʾ splits a narrow outlet for that covering, and the rāʾ lets it run on unbroken, halting at no limit; that is why "then they increased" could rightly follow it, since a covering that runs admits of increase and is not finished at its first occurrence. "After their trust" makes the act come second, not first. In īmānihim, from ʾ-m-n, the hamza readies under a held pressure, the mīm grips what has been readied inside a hollow that contains it, and the nūn sends it gently outward; so trust is an inward state with an effect that shows. The pronoun annexes that state to them as a prior possession, so that what came after it fell upon a thing that had been theirs.
"Then" brings a slackening that forbids the two acts to be fused into a single moment. Increase, from z-y-d, is a compressed packing laid over what was there and then held fast with it, and so becomes more than it was. The eighth form in "they increased" draws its bearers into the movement of acquiring and of growing, while "disbelief" is a specifier that fixes the thing which increased, so the increase is not left general.
"Never" answers the relative noun with the whole of its clause: they disbelieved after their trust, then they increased in disbelief. Acceptance, from q-b-l, is a knot that closes in the depth and joins, then extends toward what receives it. The verb is built for the unnamed agent and stands under denial, with "their repentance" in the agent's place. Repentance, from t-w-b, is a letting go of a course its bearer had been keeping, and a return that stretches back to what he had left. The pronoun, however, ascribes it to the bearers of the increase already named, and "never" denies its acceptance from them. This denial is tied to the clause the composition named in full: the repentance of one who covered over after trust and then increased in his covering. The judgment therefore hangs upon the course by which they were identified.
The preceding verse made an exception of "those who turned back and repaired"; this one joins disbelief after trust to "then increased in disbelief." The contrast springs from the wording of the composition itself: there a returning followed by repair, here a covering followed by an increase in the covering. The difference of outcome is therefore bound to the difference of the movement named, not to any contradiction between the door of forgiveness and the denial of acceptance. "Then" is the hinge that discloses the direction of the second course: toward more, not toward return and repair.
The conjunction adds a nominal sentence, and the demonstrative refers back to the bearers of the clause in its entirety; the pronoun "themselves" then comes as a separator that tightens the fit of the description. In al-ḍāllūn, from ḍ-l-l, the ḍād presses together heavily and then parts from it, the lām clings to a course and extends along it, and the repetition of the lām doubles that extension until its bearer is far from his direction while still walking on; so straying is an extension with no standing still in it, and by this it matches the increase named before it. The description comes as a noun, not as a verb, for the verse says "they are the straying," not "they stray," and so the description settled on them as a predicate settles on its subject. It is the sum of a course that moved from trust to covering and then to increase within it.
"Indeed" fixes the bearers of a compounded movement: a covering after trust, then an increase in the covering. The denial of acceptance for their repentance hangs upon that clause entire, so it is not torn out of the course that identified them. The neighbouring verse shows a difference spoken aloud: a turning back and a repairing there, an increase in the covering here. The demonstrative then gathers the acts and settles upon them the description of a continuing straying. The outcome follows the direction of the movement: a returning that repairs, or a covering that grows.
