﴾ How will it be, then, when We bring from every community (umma) a witness, and bring you as a witness over these? ﴿
The fa- ties the verse to what came before: once it has been settled that Allah does not wrong by the weight of a speck, the question comes, "How will it be, then?" Kayfa is from k-y-f, a question about the shape a thing takes rather than about whether it exists, and what is asked about is folded into the speech: how will things stand on that day? Folding the answer away leaves the listener to fill it, and the shape asked about is the shape of a scene in which everything is weighed down to the speck.
Idhā, "when," is an adverb for what is coming; it enters on a past verb, "We bring" (jiʾnā), and so makes what is coming as though it had already happened. Jāʾa bi- means to bring: the bi- carries the verb over to the witness, and the one who brings is the speaker, in the pronoun "We." Coming (majīʾ) is from j-y-ʾ: its two sound letters are a gathering that bursts into presence, and the y between them stretches the journey from absence to presence. "From every community": umma, from ʾ-m-m, is a group held together by a single aim, and min makes the witness one who comes out from inside it, so every group has a witness from itself. This is the sense that appears in another place: ﴿وَيَوْمَ نَبْعَثُ فِي كُلِّ أُمَّةٍ شَهِيدًا عَلَيْهِم مِّنْ أَنفُسِهِمْ﴾, "on the day We raise in every community a witness over them from among themselves."
The witness (shahīd) is from sh-h-d: a sense that spreads through the place its owner attends, after which what it grasped is held there and made fast, so a witness is one who was present and in whom what he saw became fixed. Shahīd, on the pattern faʿīl, is a witnessing fixed in its bearer, and its indefiniteness after "every" gives each community one witness who is brought. The scene that "how will it be" asks about is thus a scene of presence: many groups, and from each of them a witness who was present and in whom what he attended became fixed.
The address then turns to a single person: "and bring you," where -ka is the pronoun of one person addressed, brought as the witnesses are brought from the communities. In the first clause the witness was what was brought, "a witness"; in the second, the one addressed is what is brought, "you," and shahīdan, "as a witness," comes in the accusative as a circumstantial describing the state in which he is brought. ʿAlā, "over," makes his witnessing stand above those it is borne upon.
Hāʾulāʾi, "these," is a demonstrative pointing to those present and near, and whom it points to is open to more than one reading: they may be the witnesses just named from every community, so that the one addressed is a witness over the witnesses; they may be those present who hear the address; or they may be those described in the verses from the thirty-seventh to the thirty-ninth. In another place the phrase comes with "witness" placed first: ﴿وَجِئْنَا بِكَ شَهِيدًا عَلَىٰ هَٰؤُلَاءِ﴾, "and We bring you as a witness over these"; here "over these" is placed first, so the eye falls first on those over whom the witnessing stands.
The fa- ties the verse to the scale of the speck before it, and it then asks "how will it be?"; kayfa, from k-y-f, is a question about shape whose answer is folded away for the listener. The scene is a coming one made certain by idhā with a past verb: a coming, from j-y-ʾ, in which Allah brings from every community, an umma from ʾ-m-m being a group held by one aim, a witness who comes out from inside it, and a witness, from sh-h-d, is one who was present and in whom what he saw became fixed. The one addressed is then brought, by the -ka of address, and witnessing becomes his state; ʿalā sets it over "these," and whom "these" points to stays open between the witnesses of the communities, those present around the address, and those described before. After the scale, the verse draws a presence: witnesses from every group, and over them a witness who is addressed.
