Commentary
The verse opens with yawmaʾidhin, "on that day," and the -in of idhin stands in for a clause folded away, to which what came before points: the day when We bring from every community a witness. The verse thus stands inside the scene that "how will it be" asked about in the forty-first verse, and is part of its answer: how one group among those present will be when the witnesses are brought.
Yawaddu, "wish," is from w-d-d, an attachment that knots onto a thing and holds; wudd is an inclination that clings to its owner, and the imperfect makes it run on through that day. Those who wish are "those who covered over and disobeyed the messenger," a single relative with two past verbs joined together, so they are one group that gathers both descriptions. Covering (kufr) is from k-f-r, a covering that closes the outlet of appearing, and disobeying (ʿiṣyān) is from ʿ-ṣ-y, a hardness that closes upon itself and goes its own way apart from what is wanted of it, as "disobeys" was read in the fourteenth verse. Al-rasūl, "the messenger," is made definite by the article, a messenger known in the address; rasūl, from r-s-l, is one released toward an end he reaches, so disobeying him is keeping apart from a message that has arrived.
Law after "wish" marks what is wished for; the sense is: they wish that the earth be levelled with them. Tusawwā, as the verse vowels it, with u on the t and a doubled w, is a passive of sawwā, "to level," and "the earth" is its subject. So it is the earth that is levelled, and whoever levels it is folded into the speech, while bihim, "with them," joins them to it in the levelling. Levelling (taswiya) is from s-w-y, making a thing of one measure so that no part of it rises over another, so their wish is that the earth and they become one even surface from which nothing of them stands out. The manner of this levelling stays open: that they disappear beneath it and it lies even over them, or that they become part of it and can no longer be told from it.
The Book uses the same verb, sawwā, after a destruction: ﴿فَدَمْدَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّهُم بِذَنبِهِمْ فَسَوَّاهَا﴾, "so their Rabb (the Nurturing Sustainer) crushed them down for their dhanb (the fault that trails) and levelled it"; here those who wish ask the levelling for themselves. What falls there upon the destroyed becomes, on this day, a wish held by those who stand among the witnesses.
Then comes "and they hide from Allah no account." Concealing (kitmān) is from k-t-m, holding a thing inside and sealing it over, and it is the verb used of the withholders in the thirty-seventh verse, "and conceal what Allah has given them of His bounty." There, a concealing of a gift from people; here the concealing is denied and reaches two objects: Allah, then "an account" (ḥadīthan). Ḥadīth is from ḥ-d-th, a thing that happens, takes a definite shape, and is then spread and passed on, and ḥadīthan is indefinite under a denial, so it takes in every account: no report remains with them that is held back from Allah.
The wa- before "they hide" allows two readings: it may join the clause to "wish," so that it tells of that day, on which they hide no account from Allah; or it may join it to "be levelled," so that it enters what they wish: that the earth be levelled with them, and that they have no account hidden from Allah. The verse carries both readings: in the first the concealing ends where the witnesses stand, and in the second not concealing becomes a wish held by those who wish.
The -in of yawmaʾidhin stands in for a clause folded away, so the verse stands inside the scene of witnesses that "how will it be" asked about. In it a group that gathered the covering of k-f-r and the hardness of ʿ-ṣ-y against "the messenger" known in the address wishes, with a wudd from w-d-d, an attachment that knots and holds, that "the earth be levelled with them": a passive verb from s-w-y by which the earth and they become a surface on which nothing rises, the manner of the levelling staying open. Then comes "and they hide from Allah no account," from k-t-m and ḥ-d-th, an indefinite that takes in every report, and the wa- allows it to be a statement about that day, on which the concealing used of the withholders comes to an end, or part of what is wished. The verse sets, in the scene of the witnesses, a wish to be level with the earth, and a concealing that either ends before the witnesses or whose leaving becomes a wish.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is usually read as saying that those who cover will wish, on the Day of Rising, that they were dust, or that they had been buried and the earth levelled over them, and ﴿وَيَقُولُ الْكَافِرُ يَا لَيْتَنِي كُنتُ تُرَابًا﴾, "and the one who covers will say, would that I were dust," is cited for it. Many take "and they hide from Allah no account" as a statement that they will be unable to conceal, and reconcile it with the denials reported of them elsewhere: they deny at first, then their mouths are sealed and their limbs bear witness, so they conceal nothing. "The messenger" is taken as the Prophet Muhammad.
A reading that makes the levelling a burial or a turning into dust, and joins the verse to the verses of denial and witness.
A root-reading
Yawaddu (root w-d-d): an attachment that knots and holds. ʿAṣaw (root ʿ-ṣ-y): a hardness that goes its own way. Tusawwā (root s-w-y): making a thing of one measure. Yaktumūna (root k-t-m): a holding inside that is sealed over. Ḥadīthan (root ḥ-d-th): what happens and is then passed on. The verse becomes: "On that day those who covered and grew hard against the messenger cling to a wish: that the earth and they be made one surface; and no report remains with them held back from Allah."
A reading that hears in the verse the end of standing out and the end of concealing together.
The two readings do not conflict. The first fixes the form of the levelling and joins the verses on concealing; the second hears, in the roots, a wish to be level and an account that is not held back. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante

Interpretation
First: what the letters say
Wudd, from w-d-d, is an attachment that knots onto a thing and holds; levelling, from s-w-y, is parts set to one measure so that none rises over another; concealing, from k-t-m, is a holding inside with the outlet sealed; ḥadīth, from ḥ-d-th, is what happens and is then passed on. The letters draw an attachment to a wish to be level, a holding back that comes to an end, and a report that no longer stays held.
Second: the scene
Communities stand, each with its own witness, and over them a witness who is addressed. In this presence is a group that used to cover and grow hard against a message that had reached it; it now wishes that the earth would level with it, so that nothing of it would remain standing to be seen. The speech that used to be held in breasts finds no place in which to hide.
Third: the pattern that may recur in any time and place
When a person is laid bare before those who witnessed what he did, he wishes to vanish, neither seeing nor being seen, and his wish turns to the ground beneath him: that it hide him, or that he become level with it. The verse sets this wish in one place with the end of concealing: the one who held back the report when there was no witness wishes to disappear when the witnesses stand. The pattern recurs in every moment of confrontation: what is concealed in absence becomes, in presence, a weight its owner wishes he could sink with into the ground.
Fourth: anthropological speculations and projections
The wish "that the earth were levelled with them" may parallel what the American psychologist Helen Block Lewis described in her book Shame and Guilt in Neurosis (1971), where she set guilt, which turns toward the deed, apart from shame, which turns toward the whole self and which, in her description, is accompanied by an urge to hide and slip out of sight and a wish to sink into the ground or disappear. The studies of June Price Tangney and her colleagues followed, among them the book Shame and Guilt (2002), written with Ronda Dearing, and found that shame goes along, for the most part, with the wish to escape and hide, and guilt with the wish to repair.
This may perhaps meet the way many languages speak of shame through the ground: Arabic says "I wished the earth would split open and swallow me," French says, in sense, "I wished I could go under the ground," and English says "I wanted the ground to swallow me up." If the parallel holds, the verse describes on that day the form of shame at its utmost: an attachment to the wish that the earth level with its bearer, in a place where no concealing remains.
