﴾ On the day He calls you, and you answer bearing His praise, and you reckon you tarried only a little. ﴿
An adverb in the accusative, hanging on what came before it. They asked "when is it" and were told "perhaps it will be near", and then this adverb comes and ties the speech to what was never measured. Their question is not answered with a date. It is answered by a description of the day itself: what happens in it, not where it falls. The day has its own entry in the glossary. Whoever wanted the day's position in the count is not given it; whoever wanted what he will do in it is given three verbs.
Calling, in its root, is a push that rises from the depth and then extends into a link joining two ends: a thread drawn out, along which the answer comes back. Then a fāʾ between the two verbs, not "then you will answer" and not "and you shall answer". Those who had time between their first question and their second, and room in it for the motion of a head, have not one gap here between being called and answering. And "you answer" is built on the form of seeking. An answer, in its root, is what breaks out and reaches the other end and joins to it, so answering in this form is the drawing of that answer out of the inside, not merely the hearing of a call. And look at who acts. They said of themselves "to be raised", and they were the object; they said "who will bring us back", and they were the object; and here the verb is attributed to them for the first time in this whole exchange. They answer.
Then a bāʾ of accompaniment. It is not "you answer and then you praise", nor "you answer for the sake of His praise". The praise clings to the answering itself and comes out with it in one breath. And it is "His praise", by attribution to Him. Praise has its own entry in the glossary; what the verse adds is that what the answer carries is not composed by the one who answers. And these are the same mouths. They struck the likenesses, and asked who would bring them back, and asked when it is. The verse does not say that they changed; it says what their answering carries when they are called.
Then reckoning, whose root is a ruling that rings under a cover and is held in the hollow without coming to light. So what follows is credited to them and not to the verse: this is their own estimate, quoted as they make it. And "you did not tarry except a little" is a negation with an exception, the narrowest way a thing can be confined. Had it said "you tarried a little", the sentence would have kept some room in it; this construction denies the whole span and then excepts from it a little that is left indefinite. Tarrying, in its root, is a clinging to a place in which a thing is held and thickens. So what is denied is what thickened in the span, not that the span occurred. They asked "when is it" and by asking measured a distance; and when they arrived, they found nothing in the distance to measure. Whoever asks how far the appointment is has judged the road long before walking it.
The first verb these speakers ever perform is an answer, and it comes out carrying a praise they did not compose. Then their measure of the waiting collapses in their own mouths.
