﴾ Or some created thing of a kind that looms great in your chests. Then they will say: Who will bring us back? Say: The One who split you open the first time. Then they will shake their heads at you and say: When is it? Say: Perhaps it will be near. ﴿
The first item was named and the second was named, and at the third the naming stops. It says only "a created thing", and then qualifies it by what sets no bound to it: "of a kind that looms great in your chests". The list is deliberately left open and the one addressed is referred back to what he already carries. And "of" here takes a part, not the whole: what is asked is not everything that looms great in their chests but one thing out of it. They may pick the hardest item in their own store, and no one will contest the choice. Greatness, in this root, is a held-in weight that runs and piles up, and the verb stands in the unfinished tense: the piling is still going on as they are spoken to. And a place has been assigned to that piling, "in your chests". The chest has its own entry in the glossary; what the verse settles is that the greatness is credited to the vessel and not to the thing itself. What the verse declined to name, the one addressed names out of his own chest, and so becomes the opponent of his own choosing.
Then a fāʾ and a sīn. The fāʾ joins their speech to the order with no interval, and the sīn sets it in a near future: their words are written down before they are spoken. This is what the order that asked for nothing accomplished. It was neither obeyed nor refused; it made them speak. The verse gives the order no epithet at all; it only records what followed it. And look at the particle they question with. They said "who", not "how" and not "whether": a question about an agent, not about a manner and not about the fact. Two verses ago their denial fell on the fact itself. A question about the agent concedes what was being denied. And they said "brings us back", making themselves the object again, as they did in "to be raised". They call the matter a return, and returning has its own entry in the glossary; the same root ran earlier in this Surah, ﴿وَإِنْ عُدتُّمْ عُدْنَا﴾.
The answer is placed in a mouth, as the order was. And it is a relative, not a name, identified by its act alone. They asked "who", and what came back was an identification by a completed work rather than by a title. Splitting open, in this root, is a fissure that widens and then runs on: the opening of a thing out of itself the first time it is opened. So the answer does not say "the One who is able", nor "the One who will bring back"; it says the One who split you open once, when splitting had no precedent. And it is paired with "the first time", so the entire weight of the answer falls on firstness. A question about repetition is answered by the occasion that had nothing before it. Whoever has had a first has had the counting begun in him.
Then a second fāʾ and a second sīn. Their second response is also written before it happens, and this time it is not speech. The motion named here is one generated in the depth that opens out into the head as a shaking. The verse records three things and no more: the motion, its organ, "their heads", and its direction, "toward you". It does not say what the motion means, and it does not name what is in them. Whoever has seen a head do this knows; the verse does not undertake to tell him. And this motion stands between a saying before it and a saying after it: the answer came and was met not with words but with a moving body, and only then did speech return, in a different shape.
A third question, and its particle has changed. It was "who" and it is now "when". The question has settled into the existence of an agent, and only the time is left. The distance between "are we truly to be raised" and "when is it" is three verses. Then "it", a bare pronoun: they do not name what they are asking about, just as the verse gave them no names. Their whole denial has shrunk into one pronoun inside a question about a date. And the answer is the third "say". "Perhaps" is an expectation with no report in it, "that it be" is a being that has not yet occurred, and "near" is indefinite and measured by nothing. Three devices withhold measurement in four words, and not one of them refuses the question: nearness is stated, and no date is. And "that it be" brings back the root that opened the passage. They were told to be, and they were not; and of the thing they asked about it is said that it may be. The verb of being ends up belonging to what they asked about, not to them.
They asked who could do it a second time and were answered with the first time. Then they asked when, and were told near, with no measure attached.
