﴾ And when We said to the angels: settle low before Adam. So they settled low, save Iblīs. He said: am I to settle low before one You created clay? ﴿
The verse before this one began with ﴿وَإِذْ قُلْنَا لَكَ﴾, "And when We said to you," and this one begins with "And when We said to the angels": one wording in two neighbouring verses. Idh, "when," hangs what follows on a time gone by, so both sayings were said before and are called up now.
What changes is the one addressed. There, a single kāf for a single one; here, a lām entering on a named company. Nothing is added to what was named: the verse mentions those to whom it was said, and does not mention what they are.
The command comes with the lām, li-Ādam, "before Adam," and neither with ilā nor with ʿalā. The lām fixes the direction and makes the commanded act fall toward the one named.
The answer is then a single word: fa-sajadū, "so they settled low," a fāʾ that joins without delay, and a verb that is the verb of the command itself, given back as a past. The verse does not say how they settled low, nor how long they stayed, nor what they found. The compliance is not described; only the wording is given again.
Settling low, sujūd, is written in the glossary in terms that spare repeating them: a flowing that thickens and then comes to rest at the lowest point. What this verse adds is that it was commanded with a lām toward one named, and that its taking place was told in the command's own wording. An obedience that needs no description is told in the very word that ordered it.
The exception is one, and it is named. It falls on the act, not on the address: he is taken out of "so they settled low," and his being taken out of "We said" is not mentioned.
What the verse leaves unsaid is telling. No kind is mentioned for him, no origin, no rank, no state that came before; there is a name, and an act that did not come from him. So it is written in the glossary too: he is described by his act, not by his substance.
The name was spoken and the substance was passed over in silence, and whoever fills the silence has written a line that was never written.
He did not say "I will not settle low"; he said a-asjudu, "am I to settle low?", a hamza set over the very verb, by which the objector turns that verb back onto himself, in the singular. The refusal is not stated outright; it comes out in the shape of a question.
The lām that was in the command then returns. He was told li-Ādam, "before Adam," and he said li-man, "before one." The particle remains and the name is gone, and in its place is set a relative word that names no one. So the first thing the objection did was to lift out the name and keep the direction.
What is set as the relative clause is "You created clay." The verb is attributed to the One addressed Himself, so the objector concedes the making and disputes the standing. Ṭīnan, "clay," comes in the accusative, bare, not min ṭīn, "from clay," with a preposition. The material is stuck to the verb with nothing between, so the one created is returned to what he was made from, in a single word.
Creating is written in the glossary as the bringing of a thing into being on a prior measuring and a settled limit. So the very word he brought forward as grounds for lowness has the measuring itself inside it: he mentioned the clay and kept silent about the limit it was cut to.
The verse opens with the wording that opened the verse before it, and only the one addressed changes: a kāf for one, then a lām for a named company. Then comes a command with a lām toward a name, and an answer of a single word, which is the command's verb given back as a past, so the compliance is given only in its repeated wording, with no description. Then a single, named exception, falling on the act and not on the address, of which nothing more is said than a name and a refusal. The reply then comes out in the shape of a question, not in the shape of a negation, and the very same lām returns, with the name dropped from after it and a relative word that names no one set in its place; its relative clause is a verb attributed to the One addressed Himself, with a material in the accusative and no preposition. So the objection concedes the making and disputes the standing, returns the one it was commanded to settle low before to his material, and deletes his name. In the root he chose lies what undoes his choice: creating is a measuring that comes first and a limit that is cut to, so whoever names the material and keeps silent about the measuring has held the lower end of a word that has two ends.
