﴾ And We had already laid a bounty upon you, one other time. ﴿
The verse before this one opened with qad alone: "what you asked for has been given you, Mūsā." This one also opens with qad, with a wāw and a lām placed in front of it.
These are two letters added to the particle: the tool is one and the same in both places, while the weighting differs.
Both places are in the past. He asked by way of command and was answered with what is already finished; then what had been finished before he asked is recounted.
Ūtīta is in the passive, which names what was given and passes over the one who gave, whereas manannā is predicated of the nūn of majesty.
One verse lies between the absence and the presence: the giver who went unnamed in the answer speaks in the sentence that follows it.
The mann, in m-n-n, is a giving that rises out of a gathered place, reaches the one for whom it is meant, and keeps ringing after it has landed. The mann is thus an event that goes on being heard, rather than an event that runs out.
The wording is neither "We laid a bounty for you" nor "We laid a bounty toward you"; it is "upon you," with a particle of overness.
The bounty is accordingly a weight that falls from above onto a place beneath it; it comes down, rather than being handed across by the hand or sent off toward a quarter.
The same particle returns across the three verses that follow: "And I cast upon you a love out of Myself," then "and so that you might be worked under My eye," then "then you came upon a measure." Everything in the bounty descends.
The marra, in m-r-r, is one instance of a passing. The root denotes a running that touches a place and then parts from it, and the marra is that passing touch.
The favour is therefore counted by a passing that took place, not by a number that can be tallied, as though the giving were water that crossed a piece of ground, wetted it and moved on, then came back and crossed it a second time.
The word is indefinite and in the accusative as an adverb of time, with no numeral either before it or after it.
Ukhrā is from ʾ-kh-r, a root that denotes falling behind the one who went ahead and running in its track. So what the word describes is later in rank.
The word has already occurred in this Surah, in "another sign," where it meant the second after the first in the showing.
Here lies the wonder: the time described by lateness is the earlier one in its happening, and the three verses after this one go back to it. The Surah calls the old thing "another" because the counting begins from where the one addressed is standing now, not from where the event stood when it took place.
Whoever counts from where he stands finds that the first of his life has become the last of his reckoning.
Wa-la-qad weights the qad that opened the verse before it, so that two realizations in the past follow one upon the other: an answer completed and a bounty that went before. Manannā brings out, through the nūn of majesty, the doer who was hidden in ūtīta one verse earlier, and the root m-n-n is a giving that rises and whose ringing stays, not an event that runs out. "Upon you" is a particle of overness that makes the giving come down from above, and it repeats through the whole passage to its end. "One time," from m-r-r, counts the favour by a passing rather than by a number, and it stands indefinite, with no numeral. "Other," from ʾ-kh-r, describes by lateness a time that is the oldest in its happening, so the reckoning runs from where the one addressed is standing, not from where the event took place. With this word the three verses after it are opened: a counting that begins at the far end and then moves backward.
