﴾ Do they not see that it returns them no word, and owns for them neither a harm nor a benefit? ﴿
In place of "it is not a god," the verse says "do they not see," and with that it makes the whole argument a question put to an open eye.
The interrogative sits over a negation, and a question of that shape admits one answer only. Nothing new is being asked of them; they are asked to look at what already stands in front of them.
No claim follows; what follows is two absences, and the whole case is built on what is not there.
The first of the two absences is in speech. Returning, in r-j-ʿ, is a running that gathers and then comes up out of the depth of its source: a coming back to an origin, not a movement across a space.
That same root runs three times through this scene. It was the act of a man who came back, "So Mūsā returned to his people"; here it is denied of a thing that sends nothing back; in the verse to come it will be an end-point whose arrival is waited for.
"A word" is indefinite, any word at all, rather than "the word" or "their word," and the denial falls on the whole kind, at the lowest form it has.
The second absence is in holding. Two verses earlier they had said the failure was not "of our holding," lifting the grip off themselves; now the verse says it "does not hold for them," lifting the grip off what was set up for them.
The one root stands in two positions. The grip was taken from the doer when he excused himself, and it is taken from the thing that was worshipped when the case is put to them; nothing in the whole account is left holding anything at all.
Holding, in m-l-k, is an enclosing that draws together and then shuts upon what it drew, gripping. What is denied here, then, is the power to enclose the matter, rather than merely the occurrence of it.
The order of the two nouns follows, with harm put before benefit. Harm, in ḍ-r-r, is a dense pressure that seizes and stays and does not let go; benefit, in n-f-ʿ, is what rises out of a thing's interior and knits itself to the one who holds it.
What is sought from an object of worship is benefit, not harm. Beginning at the lower of the two, the one no one asks for, therefore makes the denial heavier: what cannot own a harm is not to be expected to own what stands above it.
The negative particle is repeated before the second noun, and the conjunction was not left to carry it alone; they are two separate denials, and not one denial spread across two.
The verse settles no ruling; it asks about seeing, and an interrogative set over a negation is answered with affirmation and nothing else. The case is then raised on two absences, with no claim at all: that it sends back no word, and that it holds nothing. Returning, in r-j-ʿ, is a coming back to an origin rather than a movement across a space, the root that runs three times through this scene: the act of a man who came back, a denial about a thing that sends nothing back, and an end-point waited for in the verse to come. "A word" is indefinite, so what is denied is the kind at its lowest. The root of holding then returns, the one lifted off the speakers in their excuse, and here it is lifted off what was set up for them; holding, in m-l-k, is an enclosing that draws together and then shuts upon it, gripping. Harm, a dense pressure that seizes and stays, is put before benefit, which rises out and knits to the one who holds it, so the lower is denied before the higher. The negative particle is repeated, so they become two separate denials and not one. The argument produces no proof and needs none: it is enough to look at what has not happened.
