﴾ And Hārūn had already said to them, before: My people, you have only been assayed by it. Your Rabb (the Nurturing Sustainer) is the All-Enveloping in Mercy, so follow me and obey my command. ﴿
Two verses further on the man will be questioned, "what held you back," and this verse places his speech before the question.
The reader who reaches the question therefore reaches it having already heard the answer. The verse clears him before he is asked, and it is the order of the sending down, and nothing besides, that does the clearing.
The report is fronted by a conjunction, then the oath-particle, then the particle of realization, then a verb in the past: four things at once, fixing the report and making it a past matter already finished with.
"Before" is built on a single vowel because what it would have been annexed to is gone, and the verse does not say before what. The limit is set by the sequence, not by the word.
The restriction follows. The particle states that the matter is nothing but this, and whatever they suppose above it is lifted away.
The verb is in the passive, as their own excuse was passive, "we were made to carry": twice in this scene the agent is lifted out of the sentence.
The root of assaying stands here in its second place within this sitting. It was first said with the attribution stated outright, "We assayed your people"; here they are told "you were assayed," with no attribution at all: one event, and two constructions of it.
The particle before the pronoun is the bāʾ of instrument, that is, by it they were assayed. The thing is thus the tool in the assaying and not its doer, and that alone puts the thing in its place within the whole sentence.
He does not say "your Rabb is Allah." Into the predicate slot he puts the name with which the Surah opened its own speech about the Rabb: "The All-Enveloping in Mercy, upon the Throne, settled even."
The name has its own entry in the glossary, one that can be returned to; its material, r-ḥ-m, is a containing within an interior that holds what is in it and does not give it up.
What this verse adds is the name's position in the sentence: it falls as the predicate of a subject annexed to the pronoun of those addressed. The Rabb who is their Rabb is this very name, and the clause stands under the emphatic particle, like the clause before it.
Following, in t-b-ʿ, is a letting slip followed by a catching up and a clinging, and the form of the verb turns the act back upon its doer, making it his own. The first demand, then, is a movement that falls to their own feet.
Obedience, in ṭ-w-ʿ, is a spreading that gives way and runs along with another in a bounded course, as an instrument yields to the hand that holds it. The second demand, then, is a yielding that comes at the moment of asking.
Had the second been a repetition of the first, it could have been spared. It is conjoined to it instead, so they are two: a walking behind a man, and a yielding to what he issues.
The last word is annexed to the speaker's own yāʾ. Command, in ʾ-m-r, is an issuing that gathers and then runs, and that very word will be said to him three verses later, from another mouth and in the other direction.
The question is two verses away, and this verse sets the answer down ahead of it: it clears the man before he is asked, and nothing but the order of the sending down has done so. The report is fronted by a conjunction, the oath-particle, the particle of realization and a past verb, and "before" is built on a single vowel because what it would have been annexed to is deleted, so it is not said before what. The particle of restriction then cuts away everything but the one thing, and the verb is built passive, as "we were made to carry" was built passive in their excuse; it is the root that was first said with its attribution stated outright, and the bāʾ before the pronoun is a bāʾ of instrument, setting the thing down as a tool and not as a doer. Into the predicate slot then falls the name with which the Surah opened its speech about the Rabb, whose material, r-ḥ-m, is a containing within an interior that holds what is in it, and which has its own entry in the glossary. Two demands follow, not one: a following, from t-b-ʿ, a letting slip followed by a catching up and a clinging, on the form that returns the act to the one who does it; and an obedience, from ṭ-w-ʿ, a spreading that gives way and runs along with another. What is asked is a walking behind a man and a yielding to what he issues, and the last word of the two is the very word that will be turned back on him three verses later.
