﴾ so that We may bring out by it grain and growing things. ﴿
Verses have passed that tell what was made and never tell what for. Ground trodden flat, mountains set fast, a creating in pairs, then a cut in sleep, a robe out of night, a field out of daylight, then a roof drawn tight and a lamp that will not stop, then water brought down. Nine makings, each a plain report stripped of any purpose. Then the lām arrives.
And this is not a neglect of what came before, but an order. The purpose is stated at the last link of the chain, and once stated it draws everything before it toward itself. And whoever has heard the whole list and then hears "so that We may bring out" knows that the making was no accident.
The bāʾ here is the bāʾ of instrument, and the pronoun goes back to ﴿مَاءً ثَجَّاجًا﴾, "water pouring in torrents." So the very water that was pressed out and sent down became itself the means by which something else is brought out.
And kh-r-j is a piercing that runs and then bursts into view after having been within. And nukhrij is on afʿala, so what emerges does not emerge of itself; it is brought out. Three linked rings: a pressed thing whose water was brought out, then water brought down to its place, then what is in the ground brought out by it. Every brought-out thing becomes the bringer-out of what comes after it.
Two indefinite objects, and their motions face opposite ways. Ḥ-b-b is a narrow that contains and clings, and the doubled letter tightens the packing: a small kernel drawn close, holding what is in it. And n-b-t is an emission that opens and comes out, and is then held with a fine hold until it is complete.
So the first is a closing and the second an opening, and one water brings out both. And this is the strange thing: that a single thing should be the cause of what contracts and the cause of what spreads. And there is no quarrel between the grain and the growth: this one hides away what will open, and that one opens out what was hidden.
The purpose appears for the first time after a chain of reports: one lām that gives a reason, and it draws the whole list to itself. And nukhrij is on afʿala, so what is in the ground does not come forward of itself but is brought forward, and kh-r-j is itself a piercing that runs until it bursts out. And the bāʾ turns the water that was sent down into an instrument, after it had been the thing brought out by pressing. Then what is brought out is named as two facing things: grain that contains and closes, and growth that issues and opens. One watering yields what shuts and what opens, and the stated purpose of the whole list is that what was inside should come out.
The list withholds its reason until the water falls, and then gives it in one particle. What was squeezed out becomes what squeezes out the next thing.
