﴾ And they put the lie upon Our signs, a hardened lying (kidhdhāb). ﴿
The verse before this one described an absence: a thread never run out. This one describes a presence: an act pushed forward. The connecting wa joins the second to the first and shows them to be two faces of one condition. A place emptied of reaching does not stay empty; it fills with pushing back.
The root k-dh-b is a grip that seals what it has caught, then a sharp edge that pierces out of the sealing and warps what it carries, then the lips opening to let the warped thing out. Lying, at its root, is not a covering laid over something. It is the issuing of a second copy to stand where the first stood.
And kadhdhaba, the doubled form, moves the act off the speaker and onto another: he did not say what fails to match, he ruled that what reached him fails to match. The lie becomes a verdict he hands down rather than a report he tells.
The verb does not fall on its object directly. It reaches it through the letter bi, "he lied at." That letter is the letter of sticking-to, so the falsifying attaches itself to the sign and does not enter it. The mark stays what it was; the warped copy stays with the one who issued it.
And a sign, āya, from ʾ-y-y, is an affirmed cut that runs on softly: a mark cut out so that it stands distinct, and then attention extends along it to what lies past it. A sign does not stop at itself; it is an arrow, not a picture. Whoever pushes the arrow back is left standing where he was.
Then the signs are given a possessor, "Our signs." The relation names whose mark it is, so the refusal falls on something ascribed and known rather than on some doubtful, unowned thing.
The verbal noun arrives on the pattern fiʿʿāl, doubled in the middle and drawn out after it. It adds no new report to the verb it follows; it weighs that verb: how much of it there was, at what measure it fell. A hardening in the word answers a hardening in the act.
And the letter that is doubled is the dhāl itself, which in this root is the place of the sharp piercing. To double it is to double the edge by which the warping goes through. This was not one refusal that passed. It was a craft repeated until it settled into a habit with a name of its own.
Then the very same word returns inside this surah from the opposite side: ﴿لَّا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلَا كِذَّابًا﴾, "they hear in it no idle talk and no lying." What filled the mouths here is what the ears are free of there. One word measures both directions.
So the verse completes a picture that began with a gap. The wa sets an act beside a condition: a place emptied of reaching filled up with refusal. Kadhdhabū (k-dh-b) on the doubled pattern is a grip that seals and then issues a second copy in place of the first, with the verdict moved from the speaker onto what was brought to him. The letter of sticking-to keeps the act attached to the sign and outside it, and the sign (ʾ-y-y) is a cut mark along which attention runs to something else, so it stays pointing even when it is pushed away. Then kidhdhāb comes as a hardened verbal noun that weighs the act rather than repeating it: a doubling in the letter answering a doubling in the craft. And when that same word comes back as a thing absent from the place of ease, what a life was built on here shows itself to be the first thing stripped away there.
The verse hands down a verdict on a mark that was never altered by it, and then weighs the verdict with a word doubled in its own middle.
