﴾ So taste, for We shall never increase you in anything but a piercing (ʿadhāb). ﴿
Until this verse the speech was about them, not to them: "indeed they were", "and they lied at", "We have gathered it". Then comes the connecting fa, and after it a command aimed straight at a plural "you". No new report is added. The face simply turns toward them, and the turning is itself the sentence.
Tasting, from the root dh-w-q, is a fine touch of the tip that joins and extends, and then knots itself in the depth with a cutting close. It is the least by which knowing is completed: no large quantity is asked of it. One touch is enough, and the knowledge settles and needs no second.
And the surah promised knowing twice in its opening: ﴿كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ﴾, "no indeed, they will come to know," then ﴿ثُمَّ كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ﴾, "again, no indeed, they will come to know." Here the promised knowing arrives, and it arrives by its own doorway: not an argument set before the ear, but a contact made on the tongue. What did not cross by the ear is set before the mouth.
The second fa gives the ground of the command that preceded it: taste, because what follows the tasting is not a widening. And lan negates the future with a negation that stretches on without stopping at a limit, so what is denied is not a moment but a span.
And "We increase", from z-y-d, is a compacting that runs on and extends and then holds fast in its new place. Increase, at the root, is not a passing over a limit; it is the settling of what has crossed it. What comes in does not go out.
For that reason the negation here is aimed at the direction of the increase rather than at its happening, and the exception that follows makes this plain.
The construction "We shall never increase you except in such and such" leaves the increase standing and narrows its kind to one. The promise is not that increase will stop, but that it will not branch into a second kind. The only door left open is the door they came in by.
And ʿadhāb, from ʿ-dh-b, is an emergence out of the depth that pierces sharply and then comes out to the surface. From the same root comes al-māʾ al-ʿadhb, sweet water, which goes down the throat without resistance. The piercing is one in both cases; the difference lies in its edge: once it goes down easily, once it cuts.
And the letter dhāl stands in "taste" and in "piercing" alike, and in both roots it is the letter of the sharp going-through. The command and the thing commanded meet at one letter: what is touched with the tip is what runs into the depth.
So the verse turns the face of the speech from absence to address with a fa and a command, and the turning is itself the news. Dhūqū (dh-w-q) is a fine touch that pierces and knots in the depth, the least by which a knowing completes, so the knowing this surah promised twice arrives here by way of the mouth. Then "We shall never increase you" (z-y-d): a negation stretched over what is coming, on a verb whose root is the settling of what has crossed a limit so that it does not leave. Then the exception discloses that what was denied is the variety of the increase, not its occurrence: the door they entered by is the door that remains. And ʿadhāban (ʿ-dh-b) is a going-through from the depth that comes out sharp, from the same root as the sweetness that goes down a throat, so the difference lies in the edge and not in the channel. And the dhāl gathers the command and the thing commanded: a tip that touches, and an edge that goes through.
The verse does not stop the giving. It narrows it to one kind, and hands the knowledge over by the shortest route the body has.
Or la sourate a promis le savoir deux fois dans son ouverture : ﴿كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ﴾, « non certes, ils sauront », puis ﴿ثُمَّ كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ﴾, « encore, non certes, ils sauront ».
