﴾ A thing to enjoy for a term, for you and for your grazing herds. ﴿
Three verses have been counting acts: He pushed it out flat, He brought out of it its water and its pasture, and the mountains, He anchored them fast. Then a single word in the accusative arrives, gathers all of them, and says what for: matāʿan. The acts are counted, and then the whole count is hung on whoever benefits from it.
And matāʿ, from m-t-ʿ, is an extension that is cut off at its completion. So the word carries the benefit and the end of the benefit in one breath: a use that fills itself out and then runs out from its own substance. Whoever calls a thing matāʿ has put a term on it in the act of praising it.
And it comes indefinite, not definite. It was not said al-matāʿ, which would have fenced it in; it was let go open: a portion of use whose kinds are not bounded and whose span is.
Two lāms, not one. Had it been "for you and your grazing herds," the herds would have entered the share as a tail of yours. Because the lām is repeated, they stand with a portion of their own in the sentence.
And anʿām comes from n-ʿ-m, the root of niʿma, a gift: a giving that rises from the source and settles in its receiver, clinging to him. What bears this name is marked by what was given to it, and here it is itself among those given to. A possessed thing named with a right of its own inside the very sentence that possesses it.
Then the address: "for you." The pronoun of the one spoken to returns, the one this whole passage began with, ﴿أَأَنتُمْ أَشَدُّ خَلْقًا﴾, "are you firmer in the making." They were asked first about their own weight in the balance, and they are told last that what they were weighed against is spread out for their use.
And this same clause returns letter for letter as the seal of another counting of what the ground brings out: ﴿مَّتَاعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَامِكُمْ﴾. One clause closing two lists.
So the word does the work of a seal: it is set at the end of what has been counted and says that the whole counting was for this. And what has been counted here is a roof, a ground, a water, a pasture and mountains, and what gathers them is a single word with an expiry inside it.
The acts counted before it are gathered into one accusative word. Matāʿan, from m-t-ʿ, is an extension cut off at its completion, so the benefit and its ending sit in one word, and the indefinite form opens the kinds while keeping the span bounded. Then two lāms and not one, "for you" and "for your grazing herds," the repetition giving the second party a standing portion in the sentence. And anʿām is from n-ʿ-m, the root of gift: a giving that rises from a source and clings to its receiver, so the name itself is marked by what was given to it. And the pronoun the passage opened with returns, "are you firmer in the making," so the count ends at the one who was questioned at its beginning. Six verses count a making, and then one word says whose it is and for how long.
The word that hands the whole of it over is the same word that says how long you have it for.
