﴾ And he did see him, there at the horizon (ufuq), the edge that makes plain (mubīn). ﴿
A joining wa-, an emphatic la-, and qad, which fixes an act as having happened: three particles stacked before a single letter of the verb. A sentence is not loaded at the front like that except where denial is expected.
And notice where the weight falls. Not on what was seen, not on the place of the seeing, but on the fact that the seeing occurred. The line pins the event first and leaves everything after it at the measure it stated. What gets weighted at the head of a sentence is what is being contested.
The verse names neither the one who saw nor the one seen. It says "he did see him" and stops. Before this the sura holds two figures and no third: ﴿إِنَّهُ لَقَوْلُ رَسُولٍ كَرِيمٍ﴾ with its six descriptions, and then ﴿وَمَا صَاحِبُكُم بِمَجْنُونٍ﴾. The two pronouns fall on those two, and which of them is the seer and which the seen is left where the verse left it.
Both directions stand openly: the one who has never left your side may be the seer and the one described as strong and entrusted the seen, or the reverse. The reading halts where the wording halted, and appoints nothing the verse did not appoint.
The root r-ʾ-y is a running that bursts out sharply from a held, pressurised readiness and then extends until it settles. Seeing is the falling of an image all at once and then its staying; from the same root comes raʾy, what breaks out in a person and settles as a judgement. The verb here is past and emphasised: an image that fell once and held.
The root ʾ-f-q is a bursting that opens along a narrow split, then a knotting that closes that split into a single edge. The ufuq is the far end of what sight reaches, the line where sky and ground are seamed together and nothing behind it is visible. So the place, in its own name, is a limit and not a height: the last thing the eye takes in, not the highest thing above it.
And this is read together with the bi-. "At the horizon" fastens the seeing to its place: not "toward the horizon", which would make it a destination, nor "from the horizon", which would make it a source. The event happens at the edge itself, there where the reach runs out.
Then the edge is described as mubīn. The root b-y-n is an emerging that sends a thing out until it stands apart from what surrounds it; hence bāna, to show until distinct, and bayn, the interval between two things. Mubīn is a mufʿil form, and it carries both faces at once: plain in itself, and making plain what else is there. A horizon answers to both, an edge that cannot be confused with anything beside it, and an edge on which what would be lost elsewhere shows. What appears only at the limit does not appear in the middle of the crowd.
Three particles stack at the head of the verse and fix the seeing as having happened before anything at all is said about it, and the weight falls on the event and not on its two ends. Then "he did see him" comes with a hidden subject and a pronoun object, and there is no figure described before it in the sura but two: the sent bearer with his descriptions, and "your close companion" with his bond. Both faces stand, and the verse cuts for neither. The root r-ʾ-y is a bursting that settles: an image that fell once and held. As for the place, it is an ufuq, from ʾ-f-q, a split seamed into an edge, the far end of sight with no ascent above it, and the bi- pins the event to it. Then mubīn, on mufʿil, is plain in itself and making plain besides, and both readings hold true of an edge that cannot be confused. A verse that insists the seeing happened, and is sparing with everything past that.
The verse hands the eye an edge and hands the ear no names. What it will not say, it holds as firmly as what it says.
