﴾ And your close companion (ṣāḥib), the one who has never left your side, is not one covered over in his mind (majnūn). ﴿
The line negates with mā and then puts a bi- on the predicate. That particle carries no verb across to an object here and joins no noun to a noun; it thickens the negation until it covers everything. "Your close companion is not covered over" would deny that the description landed; with the bi- the denial fastens onto the description itself.
And three lines in this passage are built on this one shape: "and your close companion is not one covered over in his mind", then ﴿وَمَا هُوَ عَلَى الْغَيْبِ بِضَنِينٍ﴾, then ﴿وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوْلِ شَيْطَانٍ رَّجِيمٍ﴾. One particle and one letter, three times over. A denial repeated in its own shape becomes a rhythm the ear keeps.
No name is given and no title. The line says "your close companion" and stops. The root ṣ-ḥ-b is a firm holding that contains and then binds fast, so a ṣāḥib is one whose staying alongside has lasted long enough to become his description.
And the whole argument sits in that attached "your". The man spoken of is not a stranger arrived from far off whose condition could be unknown; he is the one who has never left their side, whose going out and coming in they have watched. To throw a covering over him is to throw it over their own years of keeping company with him: every day of that company is a witness against the charge.
And this comes after six descriptions of another figure the sura also leaves unnamed, ﴿إِنَّهُ لَقَوْلُ رَسُولٍ كَرِيمٍ﴾. There a description without a name, here a relation without a name. The sura identifies by bond, not by naming.
Majnūn is a passive form. The charge, in its very build, does not say that he did something; it says that something was done to him. The root j-n-n is a massing that hides itself, a resonance that reaches you from behind the screen, and a veiling doubled by the doubled n.
So whoever says majnūn is saying: a covering lies over him, and what comes out of him is a sound from behind that covering. That is the build of the claim: not a refusal to hear the words, but a referring of the words back behind a veil. The sura then gives what came down one name only, ﴿إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِّلْعَالَمِينَ﴾, and dhikr, at its root, is a piercing that grips the meaning it reaches. A covering hides; a piercing goes through.
Three words carrying both the accusation and its answer. The negation by mā and then by the bi- makes the answer stick to the description rather than to its occurrence, and it opens a rhythm repeated three times in this place. "Your close companion" sets a relation where a name was expected and attaches the man spoken of to the very people speaking, so that their own long company becomes the evidence raised against them. And majnūn is a passive of j-n-n, a doubled screen with a resonance coming out from behind it: the claim asserts a covering rather than answering a saying. And of the one they said a covering lies over, this same sura says that what he brought is a piercing that grips. The nearest man to them is the one they sent furthest away.
They could not answer the saying, so they set a screen in front of the sayer. And the only witnesses to what stands behind that screen are the years they themselves spent at his side.
Aucun nom, aucun titre.
