﴾ Then it is said: this is the very thing you kept declaring false. ﴿
The verb is built for the unnamed doer. "It is said", and no sayer is named. Four verses back the Surah did name a sayer, "he said, tales of the ancients", so the same root stood there as coming out of them and stands here as falling upon them. The one who spoke has become the one spoken to.
Saying, in its letters, is a sound released and joined until it stretches to a hearer, so it is never finished with one end only. Two verses back they were called "barred", and here a saying reaches them. The barrier stands in its own direction, and the sound crosses.
Hādhā points at something near and witnessed. Declaring a thing false only works on what has not been met: a person denies what is not in front of him. So when "this" is said, the distance the denial rested on falls away. No proof is set up to argue them down; the denied thing is simply laid before them.
Then comes "the one which", a connective noun that shows nothing by itself and is shown only by the clause tied to it. And the clause here is their own act: "you kept declaring it false." What stands before them is identified by no name of its own and no quality in it, but by their having called it false. The thing is named after their denial of it.
And here the pronoun turns over. They had been spoken of in the third person for three verses: "their hearts", "they", "their Lord", "they". Then "you" arrives. The turn falls exactly at the place of the saying, neither before it nor after. While the report is about them they are absent; once the saying is addressed to them they are present.
And "in it" is placed before the verb. Not "you kept declaring false in it", but the denied thing set ahead of the denial and so held in view, the very same phrasing the Surah used earlier, "none declares it false but every overstepping wrongdoer". Declaring false, in its letters, is bringing out an outside that does not match what is kept inside, and its doubled form is the making of a thing into a falsehood rather than the telling of one. And "you kept declaring false" is a continuous habit, just as the earning was a continuous habit. The covering piled up by repetition, and so did the denial.
Thumma again, and a third stage. The verb is built for the unnamed doer: "it is said", with no sayer named, and the root that came out of them in "he said, tales of the ancients" returns as falling upon them. Saying is a sound released and stretched to a hearer, so it reaches them while the barrier stands in its own direction. Then hādhā points at something present and witnessed, and the distance the denial rested on falls away. "The one which" is shown only by its clause, and its clause is their own act: the thing is named after their denial of it. Then the pronoun turns to direct address at the very moment of the saying, "you". And "in it" is set before the verb, so the denied thing is held in view before the denying is even mentioned. What piled up until it covered is met, at the last, by what was denied, standing there in plain sight.
