Commentary
The root b-ʿ-th is the raising of a thing from its place and the setting of its direction. The two-letter nucleus b-ʿ carries a coming out from the depth, and the thāʾ thickens the movement into a full raising. Abraham's prayer, "raise up among them a messenger", is not merely a request that someone be sent; it is a request that someone be drawn out from inside the community, for the messenger wells up out of the depth before he rises to the task. The baʿth is a living structure that comes before the charge, and what is asked here is that the shoot be raised from the same soil, not carried in from outside it.
The restriction "from among them" in the prayer is structural, not sentimental. A message arrives only in the tongue of a people and in their condition, and whoever carries the trust must have lived inside the same weakness and the same human terms. "A messenger from among them" draws a standing rule: the teacher who succeeds grows in the soil of his own people, speaks their language, and knows their frailty from within it rather than from above it. This restriction reaches back structurally to "from our descendants" in the verse before: the community brings out of its own womb the one who will teach it.
Three functions follow one another in order. "Who will recite Your signs to them", from the root t-l-w, is a setting of the signs one behind another through a life. Then "teach them the Book", from the root ʿ-l-m, is the laying of the text into the mind. Then "and its understanding", from the root ḥ-k-m, is the placing of each thing where it belongs. Recitation alone is not the whole of the message, and neither is knowledge held in the head; the stage completes where conduct follows on understanding. Ḥikma is the practical mastery that puts every thing in its correct place, not knowledge held apart from use.
The root z-k-w gathers two senses into one origin: purity and growth. Tazkiya is not an operation that reduces the self or deletes from it; it is an operation that makes it grow while it cleanses it, both in one motion. "And purify them" comes as the seal of the three functions because the text and the understanding are complete only when the one who carries them turns into a human being who grows. The message does not want still followers; it wants a community that increases.
The prayer was sealed with "You are the strong, the wise", because a raising needs a penetrating power, from ʿ-z-z, able to lift the messenger out of the inside of his own community, and it needs a wisdom, from ḥ-k-m, that sets him in the fitting place and the fitting hour. The two names are not a closing cadence; they answer the shape of what was asked: the power to draw out, and the wisdom to place. Neither of them outweighs the other, and their order is meant.
So the word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity: the messenger in Abraham's prayer is a described function before he is any named person, raised by God from inside his own people to recite, to teach and to purify, and not sent down over them carrying a rank that cuts him off from them.
In Abraham's prayer, "raise up among them a messenger from among them", two structures from two different roots come together: the root b-ʿ-th requires a raising from the depth and not an arrival from above, and the restriction "from among them" settles that the messenger wells up out of the soil of his people and is not carried in from outside it. Then three functions follow in an exact ascent: "recite", from t-l-w, sets the signs one after another; "teach", from ʿ-l-m, fixes the meaning inwardly; and "its understanding", from ḥ-k-m, puts each thing where it belongs. The purifying seals them, from the root z-k-w, which holds cleanness and growth together, for the message does not aim to shrink the self but to grow it. And the prayer was sealed with "the strong, the wise", because a raising out of the depth needs a penetrating power, and a placing in the right position needs an exact wisdom. In that order the gathering sense appears: the message that succeeds is drawn out from inside the community, begins in recitation, and ends in the growth of the one who carries it.
Commentaire

🔬 Reflection
"Raise up among them a messenger from among them": The messenger who emerges from their own, not from outside
Abraham completes the sequence of his prayer. After asking for a safe land (2:126), raising the foundations (2:127), and praying for a submissive community from his descendants (2:128), he here prays for a messenger to come to them. The choice of the construction "from among them" (minhum) is a point of contemplation. The messenger is from them, not from outside them. Thus, prophethood is not foreign to the submissive descendants, but emanates from within them.
The Quran uses the form "from among them" in describing messengers in more than one place. The messenger in the Quran is a brother to his people, i.e., from them by lineage. The choice in the Quran is intentional: the messenger sent to a people is not a stranger, but comes from the same structure, language, and social life as the people. The tongue is connected to the people, because clarification requires an accord between the speaker and the listener.
The law revealed by the prayer: prophethood in the Quran is not a skill brought from outside, but a fruit that emanates from within the people after the people respond to its condition. Abraham prays for a messenger from among them after praying for a submissive community from among them. The order is intentional: the submissive community summons a messenger from its own self, and the messenger summons a community to receive him. The two parties establish each other.
"Reciting Your signs to them and teaching them the Book and Wisdom": Three verbs in the present tense
The prayer defines what the messenger does with three present-tense verbs: ﴿يَتْلُو عَلَيْهِمْ آيَاتِكَ وَيُعَلِّمُهُمُ الْكِتَابَ وَالْحِكْمَةَ وَيُزَكِّيهِمْ﴾. The sequence in the verbs reveals the structure of his function. The first verb yatlū ("he recites") from the root (t-l-w) denotes following a thing with speech as the night follows the day. Recitation is not a passing read, but a step-by-step walk through the text.
The second verb yuʿallim ("he teaches") from the root (ʿ-l-m) is in the intensive pattern (tafʿīl) which denotes transferring knowledge with effort. Not only is that which is recited taught, but after recitation comes the teaching that summons the teacher's intervention. The Book and Wisdom are complementary subjects: the Book is a specific text, and Wisdom (ḥikmah) from the root (ḥ-k-m) denotes placing a thing in its proper place. Thus, teaching joins what is spoken with what its proper place is known to be. It is not enough to deliver the text; the teacher must look to its place in the lives of the learners.
The third verb yuzakkīhim ("he purifies them") from the root (z-k-w) denotes growth in purity. Purification (tazkiyah) is not an abstract cleansing, but a cleansing that results in growth. The result seals the sequence of acts with a psychological movement that joins the positive and negative together: it removes whatever dross exists and opens the door to the growth that follows. The order in the three acts reveals a method: recitation that precedes the mind, teaching that uses what was recited, and purification that makes what was taught take the form of growth.
"You are the Mighty, the Wise": Sealing with two names that suit the prayer
The prayer seals with two names: the Mighty (al-ʿAzīz) and the Wise (al-Ḥakīm). The choice is a point of contemplation. Al-ʿAzīz from the root (ʿ-z-z) denotes the power that is not overcome, and al-Ḥakīm from the root (ḥ-k-m) denotes the one who places things in their proper places. The two names are connected to what was asked in the prayer: raising up (baʿth) a messenger needs a power that is not overcome to be accomplished, and placing him among the appropriate people needs a wisdom that chooses the site.
It is noticed that the Quran often seals the founding verses in Al-Baqarah with two names that suit the subject of the verse. It preceded in 2:127 "You are the Hearer, the Knower" connected to the prayer for acceptance. Here "the Mighty, the Wise" is connected to the prayer for raising a messenger. The two names are not repeated in every place; rather, what suits each place is chosen. This is a law in the Quran revealing that Divine names are not ornaments for sealing the text, but a choice that completes what is said.
The law: every prayer in the Quran summons a name that suits what is asked within it. He who reads the prayer connected to its conclusion finds that the name in the seal of the prayer is the Direction to which the request is addressed. A prayer is not sealed with a name that contradicts what was asked. Abraham's prayer in the arc extending from 125 to 129 seals with what confirms its subject. The entire arc teaches the reader how to call upon his Lord with what suits every place of his need.
