Commentary
The verb "has raised up", baʿatha, is set here against their own request in the verse before. They asked, "raise one up for us", and the answer comes back, "God has raised up". The same root and the same form, but the agent has shifted: they put the request to their prophet, and it is God who raises up. The wording settles it that leadership is not a holding passed down and installed by collective demand, but a divine raising up that answers the request in a way that keeps watch over the community rather than submitting to it.
The name "Ṭālūt" is joined by derivation to the root ṭ-w-l, and it carries the sense of bodily length whose explanation will come in this same verse, "increased him in breadth of knowledge and of body". The name is not an incidental historical label; it is a mark of quality whose echo comes back inside the body of the verse. The Book chooses the name that of itself points to the meaning the text is arguing over.
The saying of the assembly, "we are more deserving of kingship than he is", raises the standard of lineage, and their saying, "he has not been given wide means from wealth", raises the standard of wealth. The true, in the root ḥ-q-q, is the fixed thing that answers to what is really there; but the assembly uses it in the sense of an inherited social entitlement, not of a fitness for the task. And m-w-l in "wealth" is bound to the leaning of a self toward a thing, that is, to what the self inclines to. The assembly mixes up what people lean toward with what is sound for leadership.
The root ṣ-f-w points to the drawing out of what is pure from what has been mixed into it. "He has chosen him", iṣṭafā, comes in the eighth form, which strengthens the sense: He picked out from among many the purest for the post. And the divine answer to the assembly's protest does not meet their objection on its own level, deserving and wealth; it lifts the discussion to the level of the choosing out, a matter into which social measurement does not enter.
The root b-s-ṭ came earlier at verse 245, "He contracts and expands", in the setting of provision, and it comes here in the setting of fitness to lead. A basṭa is a width and a stretching out. And the verse chooses to make the expansion double, "in knowledge and of body". Knowledge steadies the decision, and the body carries the weight of carrying it out. There is no leadership by a knowledge without a body that can bear the toil, and none by a body without a knowledge that can read the situation. The two standards together break the pair the assembly had set up, lineage and wealth.
The close of the verse, "God gives His kingship to whomever He chooses. God is expansive, all-knowing", ends the exchange with a standard above the argument. "His kingship" is joined to the divine pronoun: the kingship is God's, and the servant borrows it and does not own it. And "expansive", from w-s-ʿ, answers their "he has not been given wide means from wealth": the real width is the width of God, and whoever God sets in the place of width is not made short by a poverty of wealth. And "all-knowing" answers the illusion that the assembly knows the standards of the choosing better than the One who knows the unseen.
So the word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity: the role of the divine iṣṭifāʾ precedes the standard of lineage and of wealth, and a breadth in knowledge and in body together precedes the "deserving" of a social inheritance.
The prophet's answer came with the very root the assembly had asked with: "raise one up" in 246 and "has raised up" here, both from b-ʿ-th. But the agent shifted from the prophet to God. Kingship is not a holding passed down and installed by collective demand; it is a divine raising up that answers without submitting. And the name "Ṭālūt" is joined to the root ṭ-w-l, length and bodily extension, a mark of meaning whose echo comes back in "increased him in breadth of body". The assembly argued from two standards outside the task: ḥ-q-q, the inherited entitlement of lineage, and m-w-l, the wealth of property that selves lean toward. The prophet answered with two standards inside the task: "He has chosen him", from ṣ-f-w, the drawing of the purest out of what is mixed in, a choosing that goes past the level of their objection. Then "breadth of knowledge and of body", from b-s-ṭ: a double width that breaks the pair of lineage and wealth. Knowledge steadies the decision and the body carries the weight of carrying it out, and there is no true leadership by one of the two without the other. And the verse closes: "God gives His kingship to whomever He chooses." "His kingship" is attributed to God, so the servant borrows it and does not own it. "Expansive" answers their "he has not been given wide means from wealth": the real width is the width of God.
Commentaire
Two Readings
Common reading
God chose Talut despite his poverty, and placed him above the wealthy and the nobles through knowledge and strength; a rebuke to the Children of Israel for their objection.
A root-reading
The verse breaks the equation of social "entitlement" that the elite builds. They weigh leadership by two external criteria: lineage ("we are more entitled") and wealth ("he was not given abundance of wealth"). The prophet answers with two internal criteria for the task: knowledge (handling the situation) and body (bearing pressure). Then he closes the dispute with a fundamental reminder: dominion is God's dominion, not the dominion of lineages; He gives it to whom He wills.
Deux lectures
Lecture courante

🔬 Reflection
"God has raised up Talut as a king for you": The selection that defies expectation
The verse begins with news delivered by the prophet to his people: ﴿إِنَّ اللَّهَ قَدْ بَعَثَ لَكُمْ طَالُوتَ مَلِكًا﴾. The selection, in its phrasing, reveals a pre-existing stance. The verb baʿatha ("raised up") is active, with God Himself as the agent. The subject "as a king" is in the adverbial case of state (ḥāl), meaning Talut is raised specifically into the position of king, not another. It is as if the people were expecting a king from a specific side, and the news brings them a king chosen from elsewhere.
The response in the remainder of the verse reveals the objection: ﴿قَالُوا أَنَّىٰ يَكُونُ لَهُ الْمُلْكُ عَلَيْنَا وَنَحْنُ أَحَقُّ بِالْمُلْكِ مِنْهُ وَلَمْ يُؤْتَ سَعَةً مِّنَ الْمَالِ﴾. The objection rests on two logics. First: "We are more deserving of kingship than he." Second: "He has not been given an abundance of wealth." The logic of "deservingness" among the people is not objective, but is tied to the speaker's own lineage. The logic of the abundance of wealth appears objective in form, but is based on an assumption: that a king must be wealthy.
The answer to both objections follows: ﴿إِنَّ اللَّهَ اصْطَفَاهُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَزَادَهُ بَسْطَةً فِي الْعِلْمِ وَالْجِسْمِ﴾. Selection (iṣṭifāʾ) was previously mentioned regarding Abraham in 2:130 and 2:132. Regarding Talut, it appears once more, revealing that the logic of selection in the Quran does not adhere to the criteria of those selected. The "increase" is linked to knowledge and body, not to wealth. The choice of these two criteria is a point of contemplation. Knowledge in the Quran is that which accompanies the sound stance, and the body is that which can bear the weight of the stance in confrontation. Thus, a king in the Quran is chosen for what suits his function, not for what suits the people's claims.
"And God gives His kingship to whomever He wills": Authority is linked to Will, not lineage or wealth
The conclusion of the verse restores the subject of kingship to its rightful place: ﴿وَاللَّهُ يُؤْتِي مُلْكَهُ مَن يَشَاءُ ۚ وَاللَّهُ وَاسِعٌ عَلِيمٌ﴾. The choice to refer to kingship as "His kingship" (mulkahu) is a point of contemplation. Kingship is in God's possession from the start, and He gives it to whom He wills. Anyone who disputes His choice is disputing possession of what does not belong to them. Will (mashīʾa) in the Quran is linked to wisdom, so the choice is not arbitrary.
The two names at the end of the verse, "Expansive, All-Knowing," confirm this rule. "Expansive" (wāsiʿ) from the root (w-s-ع) denotes vastness in the subject and the capacity to encompass it. "All-knowing" (ʿalīm) from the root (ʿ-l-m) denotes comprehensive knowledge of the subject. Together, the names reveal that God, in His selection, is expansive and comprehensive. The choice does not adhere to what people expect in their narrow calculations.
The rule: the logic of divine selection in the Quran often contradicts human logic. Prophets are chosen unexpectedly, and the king among the people is chosen unexpectedly. The believing community is chosen in every age unexpectedly. The rule breaks the logic of lineage and material wealth as criteria. Whoever accepts God's choice is in a state of submission, while whoever disputes it is in a state of claiming what belongs to another.
The verse's relation to what follows: Opening the arc with the test of selection
The verse opens an arc that extends through the verses that follow. The selection of this king in this verse opens the door to a series of tests that reveal what is within the soul. Their objection to the king in this verse is the first test, after which further tests follow in succession.
Each test reveals a segment of the people. Those who objected to the king in this verse are at the beginning of the sequence; what follows then reveals who holds firm and who recoils. The arc in the Quran graduates through tests to clarify the structure of the people. The rule: when a group is chosen for an act, it necessitates tests to reveal who in the group is suitable for the act and who is not. The objection at the head of the arc is a first revelation of those who were not in a state of submission from the beginning.
