Commentary
The first thing said about the arrival is what it does to what was already there. Ṣ-d-q carries firmness and the absence of wobble, so the ṣādiq is the one who holds together against the real. "Confirming what they already had" says that the new writing came to hold up the soundness of what they carry, not to unpick it. One phrase withdraws every argument that could have been built on "this is another religion". The recitation arrives as a witness rather than as an annuller, and it comes to sift the earlier text rather than to void it. Whoever turns back the confirmer has turned back what it confirms in the same motion, since the joining is the condition of any confirming. The verse is not weighing communities against one another over which messenger they received. It is weighing them over a link cut between the parts of one book.
Before the arrival there was a waiting, and the verse names its shape. F-t-ḥ has for its nucleus f-t, a fine splitting that parts one thing from another, and then the ḥ closes around what the split let through. A fatḥ is an uncovering that gets through once the stopper is drawn, and istiftāḥ is the asking for that uncovering on the asker's own behalf. They had been "praying for victory over those who cover", asking for the opening and for the triumph that would come by it, handling an opening still to come as a thing owned in advance. Then the opening came, and it was not a holding they could hoard. They had claimed it first as the warrant of their standing, and they denied it once it stopped serving that standing. Nothing was wrong with the opening. What was wrong was the condition they themselves had fastened to it.
Then the two verbs meet, a hair's breadth apart. ʿ-r-f has for its nucleus ʿ-r, a surfacing that comes up out of a depth once the covering has been drawn back, and then the f marks it off from what lies near it. Recognition in this root is not a vague sense of the familiar; it is a grasp that arrived after something had been uncovered. "What they recognized" stands in the completed tense: the uncovering had happened. Only then does "they covered it over" arrive, from k-f-r, the laying of a lid. The order is the whole of it: a surfacing out of the depth, and a lid brought back down onto it. This is the heaviest form the covering takes. Not ignorance, and not a turning away before knowledge, but the deliberate burying of what had already come up. Whoever covers after recognizing has acknowledged first and claimed afterwards that he never knew, and that is the exact opposite of holding together with the real.
The word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity: ṣ-d-q is a joining that comes before any collision; f-t-ḥ is a weapon that turned on the one who carried it; and ʿ-r-f is a surfacing out of the depth that was met by the covering of k-f-r.
The scene is built in two layers. Before, they had been praying for victory over those who cover, and the asking rested on a supposition that the opening still to come belonged to them. After, when "what they recognized" came, from ʿ-r-f, a surfacing out of a depth that marks a thing off from what surrounds it, they laid a cover on it. The order settles the charge: not ignorance, but a covering laid over a recognition already complete, and the proof that they recognized it is that they had been asking for the opening by it. The cause is named in the verse that follows: baghy, from b-gh-y, an asking that oversteps its limit, the narrowness that cannot bear the favour coming down anywhere but where it was expected. And "confirming" carries a binding of its own: whoever acknowledges the confirmed is bound to the confirmer, since confirming is the establishing of a link. The word precedes the term. The prayer for an opening became the weapon that turned on the hand that held it, and the covering fell after the knowing, not before it.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
Usually read as a condemnation of Jews who rejected the Prophet ﷺ after having longed for his coming, so a curse fell on them for rejecting the message.
A root-reading
The verse describes a human structure, not a people. Every community is waiting for a sign; when it arrives in a garment other than its own, it covers it. Laʿna is self-banishment from the place of mercy, a consequence rather than an arbitrary penalty. A reading that shifts the verse from testimony about a faction to a diagnosis of a movement that recurs in every generation.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
🔬 Reflection
"They had been praying for victory before": The expectation that turns upon itself
The root f-t-ḥ denotes the breaking of a closure, from which we get "opening" (fatḥ) in war, in the heart, and in speech. The form istaftaḥa, on the istifʿāl pattern, means to seek an opening with repeated urgency. Before the descent of the Book, the people were in an open state of waiting for what was to come, seeking victory through it over others.
There is a profound paradox in this form. He who seeks an opening (yastaftiḥ) knows what he is seeking it with; one does not ask for an opening with the unknown. The community knew the structure of what they were waiting for, and they waited for it as a tool of superiority over others. Then the Book arrives, and it is recognized by the very same descriptions they had used to seek victory. Yet, the arrival itself collapses the structure of superiority: what they had expected as a tool to separate them from others became, in its presence, a general opening (fatḥ) not exclusive to them.
The law revealed by this paradox is that an expectation based on superiority turns upon itself when the object is realized. He who waits for something to distinguish himself by it discovers at the moment of its arrival that the object cannot be monopolized (yaḥtajinu). Thus, the arrival of what he was waiting for becomes his very disappointment. The Qur'an uses this structure elsewhere: ﴿وَإِذْ قَالَ عِيسَى ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ يَا بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ إِنِّي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ إِلَيْكُم مُّصَدِّقًا لِّمَا بَيْنَ يَدَيَّ مِنَ التَّوْرَاةِ وَمُبَشِّرًا بِرَسُولٍ يَأْتِي مِن بَعْدِي اسْمُهُ أَحْمَدُ﴾ (٦١:٦). The glad tidings come before the event, thereby removing any excuse for those who reject the object at the time of its arrival.
"When what they recognized came to them, they covered it": Rejection after recognition
The grammatical structure of the verse is worthy of contemplation. "What they recognized" (mā ʿarafū) uses a relative pronoun referring to the "Book." It is expressed as something already known (maʿrifa), not as "that which was promised" or "that which they were waiting for." The Qur'an thus shifts the locus of recognition from expectation to presence: it does not say "what they were waiting for came to them," but rather "what they recognized came to them." Recognition is bound to the moment of arrival, not what preceded it. They recognized it when it came to them, and then they covered it (kafarū bihi).
This construction excludes any excuse of ignorance. They did not reject what they did not know, but what they recognized. Rejection (kufr) in its root sense is the covering of what a person knows; thus, it cannot occur except after recognition. Rejecting something that the rejecter himself recognizes is the point of condemnation throughout the Qur'an. It appeared previously in 2:41: ﴿وَلَا تَكُونُوا أَوَّلَ كَافِرٍ بِهِ﴾, and in 2:75 where they distort the word ﴿مِن بَعْدِ مَا عَقَلُوهُ﴾ ("after they had understood it"). Here, they reject ﴿مَّا عَرَفُوا﴾. The pattern is constant: recognition followed by covering, and the covering itself depends on the prior recognition.
Therefore, the text concludes with a sentence consistent with this structure: ﴿فَلَعْنَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَى الْكَافِرِينَ﴾. The curse (laʿna) in its root (l-ʿ-n) is a severance of a pre-existing connection. Severance here falls upon those who covered what they recognized. The result mirrors what appeared in 2:88: ﴿بَل لَّعَنَهُمُ اللَّهُ بِكُفْرِهِمْ﴾. The law: the curse is the result of repeatedly covering what is known, and the consequence fits the cause.
The verse's relation to the arc: From psychological structure to historical event
The verse shifts the dialogue from describing a psychological structure in 2:87-88 (arrogance and the "wrapped" hearts) to describing a specific historical event. That which was sought in a past time arrives as the expected object in the present. The transition between the two times reveals the structure of rejection in its most extreme practical form: this cannot be the rejection of the heedless, for the heedless do not seek an opening. These people were present in their anticipation of the object, then they rejected it when it appeared.
This invokes a law prevalent in the Qur'an: that which a person waits for in its absence may, in its presence, be what breaks him. This is because expectation builds an image that serves the one waiting; when the object arrives in its true form, the two images do not match. The collision between the two images reveals that what was expected is not what arrived, even if it is the same thing. The seeking of victory (istiftāḥ) was waiting for an object tailored to the seeker's measure, but the arrival brought an object tailored to the measure of the object itself.
This is paralleled in Al-Baqarah by what will be mentioned a few verses later: ﴿الَّذِينَ آتَيْنَاهُمُ الْكِتَابَ يَعْرِفُونَهُ كَمَا يَعْرِفُونَ أَبْنَاءَهُمْ ۖ وَإِنَّ فَرِيقًا مِّنْهُمْ لَيَكْتُمُونَ الْحَقَّ وَهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ﴾ (2:146). Recognition like the recognition of one's own children, and concealment despite knowledge. The similarity between the two verses exposes the same pattern: that which is known with the clearest recognition is rejected with the strongest covering, for he who rejects knows that what he covers is precisely what ought to be manifest.
C'est pourquoi le texte se termine par une phrase cohérente avec cette structure : ﴿فَلَعْنَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَى الْكَافِرِينَ﴾. Le résultat est similaire à ce qui est apparu en 2:88 : ﴿بَل لَّعَنَهُمُ اللَّهُ بِكُفْرِهِمْ﴾.
