﴾ They are not equal. Among the people of the Book is an upright community who recite Allah's signs during the hours of the night while they prostrate. ﴿
"They are not" opens by denying the predicate of the plural pronoun carried over from the context, and so keeps the reader from laying the earlier rulings upon all of them as one single load. Equality, from s-w-y, is a confining that connects in an extended stretch and then runs on pliantly, drawing the sides level at one measure; "equal" is in the accusative, which marks it as the very predicate being denied. The short sentence serves as a gateway of method: those whom the text is about to set apart are not to be levelled, and the differences that the acts are about to show are not to be cancelled.
"Among the people of the Book" is fronted and opens an explicit partition within the name the text itself has used. "A community" then comes as an indefinite, making no claim to be all of those people, and "upright" describes it. Standing, from q-w-m, is a knot closing in the depth that holds from within what it has gathered until it stands firm and upright. "Upright" is an active participle, conveying a nature that stands actively and continuously. So the denial of equality does not remain bare; it takes body in a partial community in which a description is ongoing.
The plural present describes the community by an ongoing act: they recite. Recitation, from t-l-w, is a precise meeting followed by another meeting that joins onto it, so that the parts come one after another, joined; its object is Allah's signs, held to their source by the construct. "During the hours of the night" places the reciting at times within the night rather than at one single moment. The night, from l-y-l, is a covering that flows out over the earth and clings to everything on it, holding it beneath and screening it. "Hours", a plural, opens scattered times within the night to which the reciting returns, so the covering becomes the setting of their standing rather than the hour at which it breaks off.
The conjunction comes as one of circumstance, and the pronoun "they" shows the doers of the act at the time of their reciting; the present then conveys their prostration as ongoing with it. Prostration, from s-j-d, is a confining that gathers and masses and then holds fast under pressure, so the movement goes down into a submission that is kept in place. Joining the circumstance to the reciting keeps the signs from becoming a bare sound cut off from the bearing of those who utter them. What the sentence states is a reciting in the hours of the night and a prostration accompanying it, and this alone is enough to undo the levelling that the opening of the verse denied.
The verse begins by undoing the blanket levelling, then draws its proof from acts found among the people of the Book themselves. "Among" singles out a partial community, and the active participle makes standing a nature that continues in it. Its acts then appear: the reciting of Allah's signs in the hours of the night, and a prostration accompanying the reciting as its circumstance. So the verse puts a measure of description and act in place of a total ruling, and keeps the names, the times and the movements within the limit of what the text states.
