Commentary
"Every" distributes the nominal statement to each indefinite soul. "Tasting" is a feminine active participle joined to its own object, so one word holds both the taster and the thing tasted. Taste, from dh-w-q, passes sharply, encloses, and reaches inwardly. Death is its stated object, and the construct distributes the ruling to each soul singly.
The restrictive construction directs a passive full payment to the plural addressees. Fulfillment extends delivery to completion, and the intensive pattern keeps that delivery followed through until it reaches its limit, so it does not stop at one instalment of the reward. Their plural rewards remain theirs, while the Day of Rising is the time named for full payment, so that nothing before it is complete.
The consequence opens an unrestricted relative condition. Its two passive actions are being moved away from the Fire and admitted into the Garden. Repeated displacement, from z-ḥ-z-ḥ, carries staged removal. Both acts belong to the same person, and both verbs are passive: he is the one moved and the one admitted.
The answer confirms that this person has succeeded. Success, from f-w-z, opens, passes outward, and reaches its bounded goal. The hidden subject returns to the relative person qualified by both movement away and admission. The answer makes the double movement the stated limit of success.
The final restriction says worldly life is only the enjoyment of delusion. Delusion, from gh-r-r, enters depth, flows, and repeats a covering of reality. The statement does not deny every worldly use; it weighs the nearer life as this enjoyment against full rewards and success.
Every soul tastes death, full rewards belong to the Day of Rising, and success combines distance from the Fire with entry into the Garden against the limited enjoyment of delusion.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is commonly read as recalling every soul's taste of death, full reward on the Day of Rising, and the success of whoever is moved from Fire and admitted into the Garden.
A reading presenting death, payment, and success.
A root-reading
Taste (root dh-w-q) makes death direct, displacement (root z-ḥ-z-ḥ) moves away from Fire, and success (root f-w-z) reaches its goal against delusion (root gh-r-r).
A reading following the soul from taste into rescue.
The two readings do not conflict. The first presents the balance; the second discloses its movement. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
Interpretation
First: what the letters say
Nafs, from n f s, is an inward containment that opens through a narrow split and then lets breath run through it, extended and connected: a bounded living thing that breathes. Dhawq, from dh w q, is a sharp penetration that knots inside an enclosure and then tightens that knot in depth: what is tasted is not known from outside it but by passing into the interior. Tawfiya, from w f y, is a knot that encloses and then runs through until it reaches its completion: a delivery that does not break off before its limit. Zaḥzaḥa, from z ḥ z ḥ, is a compression entering an inward containment, with the whole structure then built a second time: a removal in repeated pushes rather than in one step. Fawz, from f w z, is a split that opens into a knotted channel and then gathers tightly in the narrows of its goal: an attainment that opens after confinement. Matāʿ, from m t ʿ, is an extension cut at its completion and then emerging from depth: a benefit with a bounded term. Ghurūr, from gh r r, is a dense screening that flows and whose repeated rāʾ renews that flow: a covering laid again and again over what lies beneath. The letters draw the verse's balance before its sentences state it: a tasting that penetrates and cannot be reported from a distance, a payment that is not complete before its term, and an enjoyment cut off at its limit.
Second: the scene
The verse opens with a sentence that exempts no one: "every soul will taste death," and the active participle makes tasting a quality attached to each soul rather than an event awaited by some. The wording then moves from the third person to direct address: "you will only be paid your rewards in full," so the listener enters the ruling through his own pronoun. The restriction defers completion to a named day, so that everything received before it is an instalment and not a full payment. The wording adds a striking construct: "your rewards" is a plural attached to them, so the reward is many and already ascribed to its owners before being paid; what is deferred is the completion of its delivery, not its belonging to them. The consequence then opens a door to anyone: "whoever is moved away from the Fire and admitted into the Garden." Both verbs are passive, so the one who succeeds is the object in both clauses: moved and admitted. The answer then falls in two words, "he has succeeded," complete by the condition set before it. And the verse closes with a measure that looks at the nearer side: "the life of this world is only the enjoyment of delusion." The scene is three moments: a tasting that cannot be avoided, a payment timed to its own completion, and a weighing of the nearer life exactly as the wording has it: a bounded benefit that screens what lies behind it.
Third: the pattern that may recur in any time and place
This structure recurs in every account closed before its term. A person measures his life by what can be collected now: a present wage, a visible result, a comfort he can touch. When a measure arrives that places completion on another day, it becomes clear that what was collected was an instalment against the account rather than the settlement of it. From there comes the difference between what satisfies soon and what completes late. There is a second thing in the structure: success here is two movements, not one. Whoever escapes harm alone calls his escape success; whoever comes to rest in a good place while never being moved from his harm calls his arrival success. The sentence joins both movements in one person, so that success is removal and admission together. And there is a third: both movements befell him rather than issuing from him, so the grammatical object in the wording is a reminder that the end of the road is not seized by force. What recurs here is that the last sentence does not command abandoning the nearer thing; it names its term, so work in the nearer life remains standing while its weight is known. That is why calling the nearer life an enjoyment keeps working in a person at all times: not as a denial of its benefit, but as a statement of its term.
Fourth: anthropological speculations and projections
The verse's ordering, which defers the completion of rewards to a named day and then weighs the nearer life as enjoyment, may parallel what students of decision behaviour treat under the name temporal discounting: the value of a return falls in the eyes of the one awaiting it in proportion to the distance of its term, until a small present sum is chosen over a larger deferred one. What arrests the reader is that the verse does not treat this leaning by denying the benefit of the present; it treats it by naming the term of that benefit, "the enjoyment of delusion," so the flaw lies in the forgotten duration rather than in the benefit itself.
Its opening with the tasting of death may also meet what behavioural study calls mortality salience: bringing the term to mind rearranges what a person seeks and strengthens his attachment to whatever he takes to be lasting. It is worth noting that the first sentence establishes mortality for every soul, and that the sentences after it are the ones that rearrange: payment on a named day, success in two movements, enjoyment with a bounded term. The order in the wording thus runs as that field insists it does: a reminder of the limit, then a reweighing of what lies below it.
The construction of success out of removal and admission may touch what the study of motivation describes as two distinct systems, avoidance of harm and pursuit of good. Much human choosing rests on one of the two and calls it complete success. This sentence requires both in one person and only then says "he has succeeded." This is a possible parallel in describing order and motive, not a claim that the verse settles a theory of decision or of the self.
