﴾ Say: People of the Book, why do you disbelieve in Allah's signs while Allah is Witness over what you do? ﴿
"Say" opens a commanded address, and the call follows: "People of the Book." "People" is here annexed to the Book, so the relation named is the very thing they are called by, an ascription to a text that is read, not to a lineage that is inherited. The annexation rests the description on the Book itself, so whoever is called has been called by what he already has with him. The call makes the Book present inside the confrontation, and the signs they are about to be asked about are therefore set before people ascribed to a book, not before a group with no relation to them. By this the question that follows becomes the question of one who carries the very thing he is asked about.
"Why" is the shortened form of the fuller question, and it asks for the cause on which the act is built. In takfurūn, from k-f-r, the kāf covers over what has reached them, the fāʾ splits a narrow outlet for that covering, and the rāʾ lets it run on unbroken. What is asked about is an act still in course, not a settled state, which is why the question comes in the plural present and meets them while it is still running. The preposition joins that covering to a named object, "Allah's signs," so the covering falls upon something particular, not upon a bare title. Ascribing the signs to Allah establishes their source, so the question concerns a covering whose author knows where what he covers came from. That is the force of "why": a basis is demanded for an act whose object and origin are both known to the one who performs it.
The conjunction adds a concurrent nominal sentence that begins with the name of Allah. Witnessing, from sh-h-d, has for its frozen nucleus sh-h, a spreading that fades away into a void, and the dāl then presses that presence and fixes it. "Witness" is an intensive form that makes witnessing a settled attribute, wide in its encompassing. The question "why" therefore does not fall within an exchange where the act lies hidden from the one who asks: those addressed are questioned, and in the same breath it is established that Allah is Witness.
"Over" is hung upon the witnessing, and "what" opens the whole range of the work that issues from them. In taʿmalūn, from ʿ-m-l, the ʿayn appears from a depth toward the outside, the mīm gathers what has appeared and holds it, and the lām attaches to a trace and takes possession of it: work is what has come out of the interior until it has a trace that can be seen. The witnessing is therefore hung upon that trace, "over what you do," so its site is the outward effect running in the time of the address. The verb stands in the present alongside "you disbelieve," so the covering and the work run in one single time, and the covering itself enters the sum of what is witnessed. In this way the call moves from the relation to the Book, to the question of the signs, to a work that is witnessed.
The People of the Book are called by their relation to the Book and then asked for the cause of their covering of Allah's signs. The call establishes an ascription to a text that is present; the question establishes an act falling upon signs annexed to their source. The conjunction brings in the concurrent sentence, setting the question under a witnessing of Allah that is settled and firm, and then joins that witnessing to what they do. Three bounds meet in the verse: a relation voiced, an act running in the time of the address, and a witnessing that encompasses the visible trace. The question thus remains a question about a work that can be seen, put to the one who carries the very thing he is asked about.
