﴾ Say: People of the Book, why do you turn whoever trusts away from Allah's way, seeking it crooked while you are witnesses? Allah is not heedless of what you do. ﴿
"Say" and the same call are repeated from the preceding verse, so the addressees remain the People of the Book by the relation the address itself pronounces, and their description is drawn from a text they carry. Repeating the call does not, however, repeat the same question: the preceding verse asked about their covering of Allah's signs, while this one asks about an act that moves toward someone else. The repetition therefore separates a covering of the signs within their own standing from the turning of whoever trusts away from the way, and the description taken from the Book remains the measure against which both acts are held.
"Why" asks for the warrant of the turning away. In taṣuddūn, from ṣ-d-d, the ṣād closes down hard and narrows the channel, the dāl then holds what has been narrowed under steady pressure and pushes it back, and the doubled dāl redoubles that holding and that pushing until the act is one done again, not once. Turning away is restraint and push in one motion, which is why it needs both someone to be pushed and a place he is pushed from. "From Allah's way" names the place the push falls away from. Way, from s-b-l, is a fine course that connects and holds fast and then extends to its end. The object of the turning away is "whoever trusts": the one pushed is identified by his act of trust alone, the one pushing by his relation to a book, and one act stands facing another.
The feminine pronoun in "seeking it" returns to the way, and "crooked" comes as a state, or as an object, fixing what is sought for it. In tabghūnahā, from b-gh-y, the bāʾ goes out past the edge of the straight road, the ghayn sinks toward what runs against it, and the yāʾ carries the seeking on beyond itself; crookedness is a bend that turns a line off its straightness. What is sought here is a condition sought for the way itself, not another road for themselves, and the attached pronoun makes the way the very place of the seeking. With this the face of the turning away in the first clause becomes plain: whoever would push a traveller off a road first seeks that the road should look bent.
The wāw brings a clause of state: "while you are witnesses." The frozen nucleus of sh-h-d is a spreading that fades out into a void, after which the dāl fixes presence and holds it steady. "Witnesses" presents the addressees as standing in that witnessing, and so sets the turning away and the seeking of crookedness inside a state of presence and of perception joined to the act itself; the turning away is not the work of the absent.
A fresh sentence then denies heedlessness of Allah. Heedlessness, from gh-f-l, is a dense covering that opens a narrow course and then extends, attached to whatever has slipped past attention. "Heedless" comes as a noun, so the denial falls on a standing description, not on an act at some moment, and the added preposition strengthens the denial after the negating particle. "Of what you do" ties the denial to their present acts, so that it falls on a determined place, not on generality. The two states are set face to face: they are witnesses over what they do, and Allah is not heedless of their work; the covering they sought for the way finds no place on either side.
The call to the People of the Book is repeated, while the confrontation moves from the covering of the signs to the turning of whoever trusts away from Allah's way. The turning away is explained by a second movement: they seek crookedness for the way. The state of witnessing then forbids the act to be read as a full absence of awareness, and the denial of heedlessness in Allah establishes that the work does not disappear. The whole structure consists of acts and descriptions of acts: a turning away and a seeking, both running under the witness of the ones who do them and under a knowing that never grows heedless.
