Commentary
Their saying is neither summarized nor characterized. The sentence is handed over as it was spoken and set down whole inside the verse, and the verse does not answer in the same breath; it stops at the edge of the quotation.
The speakers are left without a name: a verb and a plural pronoun, and nothing after that. Whoever wants to know who they are will find in the verse only what they said. Saying itself has its own entry in the glossary.
An interrogative particle comes, and then an interrogative particle again. The first falls on the circumstance, "what, when we have become"; the second falls on the sentence itself, "are we truly to be raised". So the question is asked again inside one and the same sentence, once about the state and once about the predicate.
Had one of them been enough, the second would not have come. The first interrogative asks about a supposed time; the second asks about the ones on whom the supposed thing falls. Between the two the subject does not change: it is they in the first and they in the second.
Then comes the lām in "truly to be raised", a lām of affirmation. They have set a device of fixing into the body of the very thing they deny. So a single word carries the full force of the assertion and the full force of the refusal, and the one speaking is the same on both sides.
Bone, in its root, is a fused grip that closes and holds what lies under it: the hard thing that carries and covers, and the last thing left of whatever still keeps a shape. Crumbled remains, in their root, are what came apart at the lightest touch until the coming apart was complete and the thing slipped free, with no shape in it and no holding.
The order between the two is legible. They begin with what goes on holding, then pass beyond it to what holds nothing. They did not stop at the bone, because a bone still has a remnant of form in it; they wanted the state in which no form remains at all.
They then said "when we have become", and not "when our bones have become". They carried themselves over into the material: they became the bones and they became the crumbs. Both words were left indefinite, attached to no one, and whoever takes himself out of his own name has gone ahead of the argument against him.
"To be raised" is a passive participle. They cast their objection in a form in which they have no share of the act: they neither raise nor prevent; they are raised. Raising has its own entry in the glossary, and so does creating.
"New", from j-d-d, is a mass that gathered and then set fast, and was afterwards pushed with a penetrating push that carries forward. So in this root the new is what has had its push resumed, not what never was at all, and they deny the resuming of the push with a word that says resumption in its own letters.
They left their question at the material and did not pass beyond it. The answer will come in the two verses after this one; it takes hold of neither the bones nor the crumbs and does not contend with them over either, and orders them instead to be something harder than what they have become.
A sentence is handed over in its own wording, spoken by people with no name. Two interrogatives stand in one breath, the first on the circumstance and the second on the predicate, so that the question is asked again inside the question, with a lām of affirmation at the heart of what is being denied, so that assertion and refusal come out of one mouth. Then come two states in order: a bone that closes and holds what lies under it, and then crumbled remains that come apart at the lightest touch and hold nothing. They moved their own names into the material, saying "when we have become" and leaving the words indefinite, so that they went out of themselves before anyone took them out. They then cast the report as a passive participle, so no act in it is theirs at all, and described the thing they denied as "new", a word whose letters are a mass that set fast and then had its push resumed. The question concerns matter and waits for an answer, and the answer that comes does not touch matter at all.
Commentaire
Two Readings
Common reading
The verse reports a denial of the raising: how are we to be brought back once we are worn bones and crumbled dust? The two interrogatives are taken as denial and astonishment, and the speakers are usually identified as those among the addressed who denied the raising at the time of the sending down, with the scene filled in from what is reported of their gatherings.
A reading that identifies the speakers and stops at denial and astonishment in the doubled interrogative.
A root-reading
The sentence is transmitted in its own wording and the speakers are left unnamed. Two interrogatives: the first on the circumstance, the second on the predicate, so that the question is asked again inside the question. The emphatic lām in "truly to be raised" fixes what is being denied. ʿIẓām (root ʿ-ẓ-m): a fused, close-joined mass under a thick covering, the last thing that keeps a shape. Rufāt (root r-f-t): what comes apart at the lightest touch until the coming apart is complete. The order runs from what holds to what holds nothing. "When we have become" moves the persons into the material, and the indefinite cuts the possessive. "To be raised" is a passive participle, so they have no share in the act. Jadīd (root j-d-d): a mass that set and was then pushed out along a running line, so the new is what has had its push resumed.
A reading that hears in the shape of the denial its own machinery: a doubled question, an affirmation at the heart of the refusal, and a word for "new" that says resumption in its letters.
The two readings do not conflict. The first names the speakers and describes their tone; the second leaves them nameless as the verse left them and reads the construction inside their own words. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante

The sentence is handed over in its own words, and those who said it are left without a name. It is not summarized, not described, and nothing is said of who they were. Anyone wanting to know them finds only what they said. And because the transmission is complete, the build of the objection itself becomes readable.
Two interrogatives in one breath: the first on the state, "when we have become", and the second on the report itself, "are we truly". The question is repeated inside the question, and the subject did not change between them. Then comes the lām inside "to be raised", and it is a lām of confirming. The strongest particle of affirmation is set at the heart of the strongest refusal, and the mouth is one.
And two states in order. "Bones" is what closes over and holds what lies beneath it, the last thing to keep a shape. Then "crumbled remains" is what scatters at the least touch and holds nothing. They did not stop at the first, because a remnant of form is still in it; they went past it to what has no form at all. And they said "when we have become", not "when our bones have become", and left the words indefinite, cutting them from any owner. Then they cast the report as a passive participle, so no act in it is theirs at all. And they described what they denied as "new", which in its letters is a mass that settled and then had its push resumed. The word made to carry the denial says resumption in its own letters.
Perhaps this objection is the shape of what recurs wherever the possible is measured by whatever has been seen to hold its form: what has lost its shape is counted as gone past return. It may be that something like this can be read in the history of looking at matter, for the line between what is taken to remain after a form is lost and what is taken to be finished has moved more than once, and what was reckoned to have scattered without a trace was later found to leave a trace in something finer than the eye. And perhaps in their ordering, from what holds to what holds nothing, there is a sign that they were not denying a doer, but denying that anything remains in the crumbled remains for a doer to take hold of. This is a speculation offered as such and not loaded onto the verse, for the verse relayed a question and named two states of matter, described no returning, and settled nothing of it in its own line.
